We were invited by @slanted_publishers to design a poster for their next issue @coexist.36 on the theme of coexistence. The brief immediately reminded us of the ubiquitous Coexist symbol (originally designed by Piotr Młodożeniec and added to over the years by many designers including Jerry Jaspar) that is seen on t-shirts, bumper stickers and all over social media. Our intention was to critique the idea of the logo and reveal the flaws in this very centrist question: why cant we all just simply coexist? In a capitalistic world, one cannot expect the oppressed to simply coexist with their oppressors. As long as religious, political, racial, sexual and economic inequalities are institutionalised and enabled by a ruling class, there can be no justice, no peace and no coexistence, BY DESIGN. We wanted to satirise the notion of simple coexistence as a hippie pipe-dream with no grounding in reality or existing power structures.
