🥼🩺 What is your 𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙮? 👩🏻‍⚕️👁 ⠀ Getting my 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒓 felt so surreal today. 🥺 ⠀ I remember about 1 year ago, the moment I fully decided I wanted to apply for ophthalmology, I wrote this down on an index card: “𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮.” I kept it at my bedside table and looked at it almost 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. I put it as my wallpaper background on my phone for an entire year. I called out to the world, asked for this, and worked hard to 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲. ⠀ Even though the University of California (UC) system has been a long established educational system, UC Riverside School of Medicine only began about 4 years ago. Up until my year, 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘆𝗲𝘁. I felt blind-folded trying to hit a piñata! No path to follow. ⠀ At the time, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵. ⠀ I still remember my heart racing whenever someone would ask me, “what specialty are you applying for?” 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. Soon I kept saying it and slowly became more confident as I found mentors that said: 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐃𝐎 𝐈𝐓. ⠀ My hands down 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 rotation as a medstudent was rotating at Loma Linda University (LLU) for ophthalmology. Rotating there felt like home. Swipe left for 𝗺𝘆 𝗟𝗟𝗨 𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 and my last day of rotation when my attending and resident took me out for MATCHA ice-cream (my fave). 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆. ⠀ One year later, here I am, matched into ophthalmology and calling 𝐋𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄. ⠀ ❗️What do you want to write on your index card? ❗️What dream do you want to make a reality? 🔅𝐈 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧, 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐈𝐓 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭. - @be.a.doctor_ on Instagram

I worked there 3 days a week on top of interning 4 days at Stylesight (RIP). I only worked there for 3 months but made lifelong friends and memories. Sad to see the retail stores go - it was such a breeding ground for young creatives in downtown NYC. I’ll never forget - the @yokoonoofficial collaboration and trying to sell the hand crotch pants, interviewing @future with @braydyolson for the OC Blog and looking up everyone’s passports with @kidjongo in the back stock, and so much more. PM Spirits was turned onto @netaspirits when the original street puma @smittysmoov got word from two industry friends  -- the first source was a natural wine retailer and the other was on the restaurant side of things -- telling him he had to taste the agave spirits from a new and at the time unheard of cooperative out of Oaxaca. After a few weeks of nudging Leo relented, tasted, and thought, “Wow these are fucking bad-ass!” When @captncognac tasted the stuff, he too knew the juice was special. Calls were made, practicalities sorted, fast forward and we started importing NETA last fall.   “NETA” is a slang term that simultaneously asks “for real?” and exclaims “for real.” It is the perfect name considering how real these guys are. The cooperative was established by long time friends @nikinakazawa and @max.karwinskii . Niki comes from a background of art, design and food. She lived in Mexico City and organized many cool restaurant and art pop ups, while Max was in Mexico to learn Spanish. Max soon became friends with a few family producers of agave spirits in Logoche, Miahuatlan where he was welcomed after proving himself to not be some outsider looking to exploit. It’s clear that Max was struck big time by the spirit of the people, the land and the distillate. Like many natural wine producers in France, Italy, Spain (and elsewhere) who decide to forego AOC, DO, DOC laws and their equivalents, NETA has decided to step out of the confines of the CRM (Consejo Regulador del Mezcal – the governing body that set the rules and regulations of regions, permitted agave varieties, certification, and more) and instead label themselves as destilado de agave. We are psyched to have a shipment of new NETA arrivals coming SOON from Paula Aquino Sánchez, Candido García Cruz, Celso García Cruz (all pictured) in addition to new agave spirits from maestros Heriberto García Sánchez and Hugo García. As Organic September is starting to draw to an end there is a fabulous iniative by @ifoamorganics @soilassociation to show the faces of all those farmers around the planet who are certified organic. Those that produce fabulous organic food, drink and other products and who along the way are increasing biodiversity and protecting the future of the planet in a tangible and demonstrable way. Every one of us certified organic farmers have proved year on year that we are meeting and upholding exemplary standards. So here I am, Jan, owner of Maddocks Farm Organics which specialises in organic edible flowers and leaves.
