Looking for freedom, open air, adventure? The Queenslander cover on this day in 1933 featured this sailboat illustration (looks like a cutter to us) and the caption With Every Rag Drawing. A Brisbane River Study. These gusty days in Brisbane of late seem like a great time to hop on board and unleash your inner Hemingway (minus the scotch and soda). My heart sinks with the city of Karachi. Its painfully ironic how the city where theres a scarcity of water is now flooded with it. Its shattering enough just to think about the people whore suffering from the damage the flood has caused - not only to their personal belongings but also to their beloved city. The least we could do is pray for the vulnerable ones, pray that their hopes do not get swamped with their city, that they do not feel helpless in these extremely adverse times. 🙏 📷: memories from 12 - @wanyahanif on Instagram

On 19 November 1944, Shinano was formally commissioned at Yokosuka, having spent the previous two weeks fitting out and performing sea trials. Worried about her safety after a U.S. reconnaissance bomber fly-over, the Navy General Staff ordered Shinano to depart for Kure by no later than 28 November, where the remainder of her fitting-out would take place. Abe asked for a delay in the sailing date as the majority of her watertight doors had yet to be installed, the compartment air tests had not been conducted, and many holes in the compartment bulkheads for electrical cables, ventilation ducts and pipes had not been sealed. Importantly, fire mains and bailing systems lacked pumps and were inoperable; even though most of the crew had sea-going experience, they lacked training in the portable pumps on board. The escorting destroyers, Isokaze, Yukikaze and Hamakaze, had just returned from the Battle of Leyte Gulf and required more than three days to conduct repairs and to allow their crews to recuperate. - @world_ofwarship_13 on Instagram

Fishing Boats, Key West ⠀⠀ 1903 ⠀⠀ Winslow Homer ⠀⠀ Few of Homer’s watercolors rival this one for its effects of simmering sunlight and steamy atmosphere, achieved through the speed of application of wet on wet washes, the broad and dexterous exploitation of the white paper reserve, and the judicious sponging of wet pigment, especially in the shadows, reflecting light off the water. This picture is also exceptional for the number and visibility of its pencil marks, not only to indicate some of the boats’ rigging (and betraying the pentimento of a sloop in the background that the artist edited out) but also to enliven the rustle of the sailcloth lifted by a phantom breeze. By contrast, Homer, in masterly fashion, merely daubed in the figures freehand, sacrificing nothing of their form and weight; they even seem to speak. . . . . . #winslowhomer #winslowhomerart #artcurious #artinterested #artenthusasitc #artcollector #artaf #painting #paint #art #artoftheday #contemporaryart #fineart #painter #create #artist #artlover #ipreview via @preview.app - @mixed_media_artwork on Instagram

#psychedelic #psychedelicwords #psychedelicart #psychedelicmind #psychedeliceyes #psychedelicreflection #psychedelicthoughts #openyourmimd #openyoursoul #openyoureyes #mushrooms #lsd #trip #vibe #goodvibes - @alien.dmt on Instagram

Did you know that saltcod was the nation’s fourth leading export after the American Revolution? And that the waters between Penobscot Bay and today’s Canadian border were among richest fishing grounds during the Civil War era? Join us on September 25th, 2020 at 4 PM for Maine Sea Grant’s next Coastal Conversation radio program on Community Radio WERU 89.9 FM, as we celebrate Maine’s bicentennial with Karen Alexander and Bill Leavenworth, historical marine ecologists who have pieced together Maines 19th century fishery. The photo, an old 1907 postcard from the private collections of Bill Leavenworth, is representative of how many coves and inlets on the coast of Maine likely looked in the 1800’s, when inshore fisheries, farming and woods work drove the economy. - @maineseagrant on Instagram

FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans. Her wreck remained in Toulon until she was stricken in 1955, and scrapped three years later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapon : 8 x 330 mm (13.in) guns 16 x 130mm DP guns 8 × single 37mm AA guns 32 × 13,2mm AA machine guns ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #fs #fsdunkerque #dunkerque #france #french #ww2 #history #ship #battleship #navy #frenchnavy - @worldhistory_id on Instagram

On Sept. 13, 1975, a cluster of white-sailed yachts gathered near the World Trade Center for the second annual Governor’s Cup Race, a state-sponsored event intended to promote New York as an appealing, recreational maritime port. “Theyre always talking about how dirty the harbor is, but just look at how beautiful those boats are,” Jack Rosen, an observer, told @nytimes as he gestured toward billowed sails on the 17-and-a-half-mile course along the Hudson River. From a perch across the river, Times staffer Carl T. Gossett Jr., who served in World War II as a Navy photographer, covered the race that day and made this panorama of Lower Manhattan. At the time, the twin towers were a relatively new feature of the city’s southern horizon, and, at 1,368-feet tall, the north tower of the World Trade Center (briefly) held the title of world’s tallest skyscraper. The unmistakable pair of buildings would become New Yorks unofficial trademark for the last quarter of the 20th century, symbols of human ambition, ingenuity and might. When hijacked jets destroyed them on Sept. 11, 2001, the gaping holes in the craggy peaks and valleys of the skyline were palpable. #nytarchives - @nytarchives on Instagram

We’re engaging in some end-of-summer virtual travel, with the help of our collections! Today, we’re taking a trip to Italy, which has lured visitors for centuries. Whistler chose a rough brown paper to execute his pastel view of Venice, exploring the vivid hues of the sunset. Silvestre recorded the spectacular Fountain of the Dragons at the Villa d’Este, a 16th-century palace near Rome that was already a tourist attraction when he visited it in the mid-17th century. In Florence, Newman masterfully exploits the subtle tones of watercolor to highlight the variegated patterns of the church of Santa Maria Novella. Sargent, who visited Venice many times, rendered the Grand Canal in a quick, wet shorthand that captures the play of light on the water. #Italy #ArmchairTravel #MuseumFromHome #JohnSingerSargent #Whistler #HarvardArtMuseums - James Abbott McNeill Whistler, “The Storm: Sunset,” 1880. A little history lesson looking at the ‘Super J’, Ranger - the fastest of all the American J’s. 1️⃣ Starling Burgess and Olin J Stephens designed Ranger for Harold Vanderbilt’s 1937 America’s Cup defence against Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Endeavour II. 2️⃣ Built from high grade steel, Ranger was launched on 11th May 1937. Disaster struck on the delivery trip from Maine to Newport when rigging parts fell from the mast whilst under tow. Nothing could be done at that stage of the delivery and the top 30 broke off. Fortunately, a new aluminium mast built for Rainbow was loaned to the project and used throughout the Defender series until Rangers mast could be repaired. 3️⃣ Ranger went on to prove conclusively that she was the fastest of all the American yachts. She beat the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. 4️⃣ By the end of 1941, Ranger, which had been laid up with all the other US Js, was scrapped. 5️⃣ The Ranger that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark in 2003. Find out more about Ranger and the other J Class yachts on the website. Many people have remarked that my paintings display a fondness for tangled foregrounds, screens of foliage, and particularly for pendulous branches. They say, it looks Japanese. Experience at the lake, however, might teach them that such are typical of the wild Canadian woods; that vegetation obscured the view nearly everywhere, and that the tangle of growth is so thick that often an axe is needed to cut a way through. If they have kept to the beaten path, then they probably respect convention in art as well as in life, writes Walter J. Phillips in an unpublished manuscript titled Wet Paint from the 1920s/30s. There is less than a month left to see work by the consummate Canadian printmaker at the McMichael. 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘑. 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘴: 𝘈𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘬𝘦, is on view through October 12. 🖼️: Walter Joseph (W.J.)
