Falkland Palace, Falkland. Fife. Scotland 🏴 Falkland Palace in Fife began life as a 12th Century Hunting lodge which was expanded into a castle for the Earls of Fife, Clan MacDuff. The surrounding Oak forests provided a perfect playground for hunting, particularly of Deer and wild Boar imported from France. The ancient forests also provided timber for the building of Scottish naval ships in the medieval period. King James IV and V transformed the castle over a forty year period in the 16th century into a renaissance Royal Palace and spent a huge amount of their time here. French inspired gardens were created to the rear of the Palace as was a tennis court which opened in 1539AD, the oldest in the world today! Mary Queen of Scots was an avid Tennis fan like her father and grandfather James IV and V before her and court papers of the time describe her playing tennis at Falkland whilst wearing mens breeches (trousers!) .... quite the scandal!! 👖 🎾 Falkland is a beautiful little village with some fantastic old buildings and a must see on any @visitscotlandtours and @escociatours trip, particularly if you are an #Outlander fan as this village played the part of Inverness in the hit series. Rappresenta nel campo delle fortificazione di transizione l’applicazione delle teorie e dei modi di costruzione del fronte bastionato a puntoni rotondi a pianta triangolare indicate nel Trattato sullarchitettura militare di Francesco dì Giorgio Martini (disegnati anche da Giuliano da Sangallo nel Taccuino Senese: fortificazioni triangolari: stellari) e attuati sia dal Francione (sua ultima opera fortificata dopo Sarzana), sia da altri componenti della sua bottega fiorentina. Esempi importanti di un certo modo di costruire larchitettura militare in funzione delle nuove armi che possiamo far andare dalla rocca Costanza dì Pesaro del Laurana, a quella di Senigallia, alla rocca di Ostia del Pontelli a Volterra, a Colle Val dElsa, dello stesso Francione, a Castel SantAngelo di Antonio da Sangallo il vecchio, etc. fino alla vicina grande fortificazione di Sarzana. Today’s featured post is from @rocks_beat_scissors, check out their Instagram for more great #scottishstories! The beautiful Eilean Donan Castle was built around 13th century as a fort for protection from Vikings. Over the centuries, the castle itself has expanded (at one point it had a large wall all around the island) and contracted in size and changed hands a few times until it was given to the Clan MacRae. To date it remains their (partly lived in) family home as well as the place of the clans annual gatherings. However the castle we see today is the result of a massive renovation project. The original castle was blowed up and destroyed by an English garrison during the Jacobite Uprising (17/18th century) and for best part of 200 years stayed a ruin. In 1911 Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island and along with his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932. The interior is amazingly done and we spent over an hour walking through the rooms (renovated to the tiniest of details) and chatting to friendly staff who were more than happy to tell us all the interesting stories. Parking is free and the time required for a visit is 1-3hrs. It has a cafe on the premises that does snacks and coffees. - @scottishstories on Instagram

I was fortunate enough to have then opportunity to visit Balintore Castle, which is currently undergoing renovation, having been saved from almost certain destruction through neglect over many years. Having visited so many ruined castles and country houses its refreshing to see one given a new lease of life. I was invited up by the current owner who gave me a tour of the building, showing me the work they’ve carried out to save the building whilst also talking about the lengthy compulsory purchase order. I shot this using a panoramic film camera I was experimenting with, to try and add something different to my normal work. It’s a bit of a learning curve using film when you’re so used to everything an everyday digital camera has to offer, but it can be quite fun and the results can be varied depending on whether you forget to wind on the film or not! Access to the castle is by appointment only as David, the owner, currently lives in it.
