Did you know that women werent allowed to compete in the 1500m in the Olympics until 1972 in Munich or in the 10,000m until 1988 in Seoul? As a pioneer for women in track and field, Francie Larrieu Smith competed in both of those events. All-in-all, she made 5 Olympic teams in three different distances including the marathon in 1992. In this conversation with Kara and Shanna (and a special guest co-host), Francie talks about growing up as one of nine children where she aspired to be an Olympian from a very early age in spite of not having access to sports as a young girl in school. She made her first Olympic team at the age of 19, and she shares how she struggled at those games due to the emotions from the terrorist attack at the Olympic village in Munich. Francie discusses racing in the first Olympic 10,000m in 1988, and she gets emotional talking about what it was like to carry the flag at the opening ceremony for the US at the 1992 games in Barcelona. Francie also provides us with insight into the early days of drug testing and how she approached competing against dirty athletes during her 20+ year career. As an athlete and later as a coach, Francie has dedicated her life to the sport of track and field. Estás dos palabras resonaron una y otra vez en mi mente, a lo largo de los años en diferentes situaciones, y variados panoramas. Pero por alguna razón, siempre lograban ser completamente acertadas. Recuerdo que frente a cada desafío que se me presentaba, en especial los que me frustraban, porque aún dando lo mejor de mi no podía lograr buenos resultado. Ella me repetía esta simple y mágica oración. Que automáticamente me hacía cambiar el foco. Lo realmente importante era intención, no el desenlace. Si ponía todo mi amor, y buena voluntad, ya bastaba. “Acordate, con amor. La intención que le podemos a todo lo que hacemos es lo realmente importante” Ahora, me lo repito yo misma es mi cabeza cuando algo me da miedo, duda o siento que no puedo desenredar un hilo en particular. “Con amor” es una de las mejores enseñanzas que me dieron en mi vida. To those who love reading about Pasadena history or have researched its distant past, Hiram A. Reid is a familiar name. He is the author of History of Pasadena: Comprising an Account of the Native Indian, the Early Spanish, the Mexican, the American, the Colony, and the Incorporated City (1895), a voluminous book whose lengthy title is indicative of the books cyclopedic scope, which covers almost every aspect of Pasadena’s early history. A doctor by training, Reid wrote this comprehensive history at the suggestion of William Knight, auditor of the Mt. Lowe railroad. Whats interesting is that he initially thought it was a joke but then took up the idea of being a historian after much enthusiastic support from his wife and fellow Pasadenans. Gathering material and information for his book meant going from place to place, and so at the age of 60 or thereabouts, the venerable doctor bought a bike and learned to ride. It wasn’t easy at first and Reid had many a fall on his bike, but he soon became quite proficient at getting around on two wheels. Here is a photo from around the time of the book’s publication showing Dr. Reid and his wife, Addie, and their two adopted grandkids riding to church. The Pasadena Public Library has an original copy of Reid’s book plus a few reproductions. WOMENS (BIKE) HISTORY: 3 DAYS, 5 WOMEN, 250 MILES #TBT by Carolyn Szczepanski Decades before AIDS Rides, Critical Mass, Tweed Rides and more, five women embarked on a group ride from New York City to Washington, D.C. during Easter weekend in 1928. Yes, 1928! These five New Yorkers — Marylou Jackson, Velma Jackson, Ethyl Miller, Leolya Nelson and Constance White — biked 250 miles over three days. On the first day of their ride, they biked 110 miles to Philadelphia. The second day, they biked 40 miles to Wilmington, Delaware. The third and final day, they biked more than 100 miles, arriving in Washington, D.C. around 9pm. Once in D.C., they did some sightseeing around the National Mall and @howard1867. They also took time to have the above photograph taken. I love how they sit so confidently on their bicycles, resplendent in their leather jackets, caps, bloomers and stylish socks. When asked what motivated them to embark on the group ride, they responded that they were motivated by “the love of the great-out-of-doors” that each of them cherished. Interestingly, they also challenged other young women, 21 years old and older, to replicate their trip in less time. What are we to make of this challenge, the professed love for “outdoor” culture and the trip, in general? And what was happening in 1928 that provides a context for the ride?
