The 2020 AJC Decatur Book Festival presented by Emory University kicked off today, September 4! This years virtual festival will run until October 4 and include a variety of experiences. Check out a few upcoming events below: The Decatur Book Festival is partnering with the Dekalb Entertainment Commission and Georgia Humanities to distribute free books to Atlanta communities during several of the festival’s virtual events. Today marks exactly half way through my trip! I’ve had the most incredible time exploring Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Australia and now New Zealand! With 15 weeks until the Vienna Marathon, I’ve decided to stop using Hanson’s marathon method and go for a less time-demanding plan. Currently I’m finding it too difficult to fit in 6 days a week of running, along with strength training and yoga, whilst backpacking. A 4 day plan will be more realistic to stick with whilst sightseeing and constantly moving between cities/countries. Still haven’t found a good new plan so I’m making it up as I go for now 😬 here’s a photo from my run/walk along the Coogee to Bondi path and back. 4 years ago, I remember interning at @kohls as one of my first internships. I remember my first two weeks there, my manager asked me why my clothing I wore was baggy and didn’t fit me; truth was, I couldn’t afford professional clothing, so I borrowed my dad’s because that’s all I had. When he heard this, he offered to discount my clothing, and it was the first time I’d actually purchased professional clothing during that time, and this changed my perspective on how first impressions make a huge difference. Every year, I would send him a Christmas card and visit him to bring goodies. However, I stopped for a year because I moved to the Bay Area. A few months ago, I heard from my sister that she was interviewing for Kohl’s and said she was interviewing for the same location; I asked her if my manager was still there, and it was him. He gave an offer to her on the spot. Fast forward to now, I paid him a visit again; he was so happy to see me; he said he never forgot about me and was proud of me. He even had my Christmas cards on his board in his office! Why I share this: Never forget those who first believed in you. People sometimes don’t remember what you say, but people remember how you made them feel. A simple thank you is sometimes all you need. Today was my 15th time bringing small groups of visitors Sable Island. I am incredibly fortunate to show such interested and thoughtful people this special place. Not surprisingly, it takes a long time to even scratch the surface of understanding the things that make this island unique and magical, but I am beginning to. Its not just horses and seals on a sandy island. It is so much more. From endemic species, to regular and unique migratory visitors, or the delicate balance of ecosystem and habitat taking place in solitude. The structure of the dunes has its own ebbs and flows like the tides and currents that surround it. It is ever changing, protecting and exposing, always in motion, and providing a home to the very things that preserve its existence. I am Kate 👋🏻 and I am a wallpaper and surface pattern designer based near to Kingston, Ontario. I am originally from England and moved to Canada in 2000 after completing a Fine Art degree at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I am a dual citizen and am proud to be British and Canadian. My whole family still lives in England and although I miss them dearly, I am incredibly grateful for my life here in Canada. My home town is Rugby, the home of Rugby football. I am a Midlander and have the accent to prove it! My mum and dad still live there and every time I go home I still see my oldest friends since we were four years old, Tracy, Sarah and Deborah. It gets very loud when we are together. I launched my business almost five years ago and I have four collections of wallpaper in collaboration with Montreal based @wynil_walldecor WYNIL are a family operated business and I feel so lucky to collaborate with a brilliant team who are creatively driven and have no limits to ideas and ambition! We are currently working hard behind the scenes and we will soon launch my fifth wallpaper collection. I cant wait to share it with you! All of my wallpaper designs are created by hand, working on transparencies in indian ink, brush and fine line pen on my light table. I then scan all layers into my computer, add colour, create motifs and then finally the repeat patterns. I am married to @johnnycylam We exchanged rings in a cave in rural Cuba 4 years ago and were shortly after hospitalized for 8 days with dengue fever. It was quite special as you can imagine! We made our marriage official later that year in a tiny ceremony. It was brilliant. Johnny is a very talented photographer who specializes in portraits. He captured this photo! An update on our Volunteered Vehicles initiative, launched during lockdown to support the fight against COVID-19 around the world. Our new @mrporterlive Premier delivery vans in Milan (pictured here) have travelled over 4000 km since April with the @crocerossaitaliana and delivered 2,600 essential packages of food and medicines to the vulnerable in the city. We also donated the use of our vehicles to a number of charities in Hong Kong, New York and the UK. In London the vans were used by @Age_UK and the @emergencydesignernetwork, the latter of which delivered a total of 45,600 masks and 14,124 sets of scrubs to over 50 hospitals, doctor surgeries and care homes in the capital. #YNAPSustainability - @ynap on Instagram

I have gained a bunch of followers over the past couple of days so I thought this would be a great chance to share a little more about my background with you all ✨ I have been painting, drawing and designing for as long as I can remember … as a kid you would never find me without my prized possessions - a purple, tiered Crayola crayon box set and my immaculately kept Derwent pencil collection. Kingfisher blue was my favourite… closely followed by Jade Green and Magenta. The fact that I still remember the exact names is a pretty good indication of how obsessed I was with them 🤣🤣. (FYI I still have them - and, of course, they’re still in perfect condition 🤩🤣). Mum saw that I wasn’t great at anything physical 😂 and quickly realised how much I loved art, so she put me in a range of different art classes from day dot. I was quite an introvert as a kid and would literally happily draw and colour every single day for hours on end… I guess not much has changed! Coming from a European family, education was super important and mum was a bit of a crazy woman when it came to us doing well in school and studying. Rules were incredibly strict in our household (just ask my girlfriends 😆) and it was no secret that my sisters and I were expected to work hard and achieve. So once I finished high school there were no buts about going to university! No GAP year or travelling hippie artist life for Karina 😭😜. Even though I resented my mum for it at the time, I am now incredibly grateful for the ‘nothing comes without hard work’ mentality that has been instilled in me 🧡 Once I completed high school I started selling my paintings at Bondi Beach markets, to make a bit of cash on the side, and went to university at the UNSW College of Fine Arts (COFA) where I completed a Bachelor of Design degree majoring in Graphics and Textile Design ... and that’s where this journey began back in 2002. ... Haven’t posted on Instagram in over a year but figured today would be a good day to! My mom found out she had breast cancer back in September and it’s been a long and difficult journey for her. She lost over 30 pounds, had no appetite and could barely walk up the stairs. But she managed to persevere through it all. How have we responded to the pandemic..? After deciding a few weeks ago that we would not be able to keep our physical food bank open in March (and it’s looking like maybe not for April now either), we pivoted to creating an ordering system that our volunteers could use to start sending out a fruit and veggie #GoodFoodBox to TVFB clients . And now that the system is up and running we’ve sent boxes to over 200 people who are really struggling right now - and we will keep sending them! . Because of a generous matching donor you can buy someone a large food box by donating $11 via the link in our bio. . So what’s going on in this picture then, you are wondering! . Because we are ordering the aforementioned boxes for our clients we aren’t packing them ourselves, so we had some extra donations we wanted to put to good use ASAP, and so today Matt dropped off some @vega_team bars and @motherraw bbq sauces to the community centre where we usually have our food bank! . . My name is Veronica Leahy, and I’m a student in Harvard University and Berklee College of Music dual degree program. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 8 years old. I remember feeling so confused and scared after that diagnosis, thinking I could never be a “normal kid” again. What I’ve learned is that “normal” is overrated— type 1 diabetics are superstars, and even though our daily lives are complicated and challenging, we push through those tough moments with great strength and resilience. I don’t let this disease stop me from pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a professional musician. This chapter has taught me so much, granted me new friends & deepened my roots with old ones - while allowing me to be there for my mom when she really needed it. For all those reasons and more, I’m beyond grateful. I know this was all possible with the support and talents of our incredible team and amazing customers. Starting a business that would bring joy and connection during lockdown. This is one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen. Meet Ben and Bligh, the ‘secret squirrels’ of Bayside from @signfairyau.melbournebayside, a business that enables people to celebrate birthday’s, milestones or other general moments in friends and families lives while we can’t physically connect with them! Both Ben and Bligh, prior to COVID-19, were international flight attendants for Qantas, based in London. Having lived overseas for two years, they knew the challenge of wanting to be part of their loved ones special moments, but not being there to do so. So when they suddenly found themselves grounded in January, they wanted to do something that brought about joy and connection to those in Melbourne. Sign Fairy deliver and set-up for hire, personalised large Sign Fairy Yard Displays/ Signage for any occasion. Birthdays, anniversaries, baby announcements, welcome home, Fathers Day and any other special occasion you can think of.
