Weve created musical care packages to send to them where they live, with music-making activities that you can do without much space, an instrument or even an internet connection. There are also journalling exercises, colouring-in, recipes, craft activities and a stamped-addressed envelope and postcards so that they can stay in touch with us and their friends. We are also putting together digital resources to share weekly over the seven weeks of the summer holidays, to help young people to express themselves through music, and connect with us and each other. With these resources, we hope to spark joy 🌟, and support positive mental health and creativity in a time of real hardship for many. This recent study also showed that Gpld1 increases in the blood circulation of mice following exercise and that Gpld1 levels were significantly associated with enhanced cognitive performance. ⠀ The research team also genetically engineered the overexpression of Gpld1 in mice. They found that increased production of Gpld1 was associated with increased cognitive performance as well as increased hippocampal neurogenesis. ⠀ Because it does not cross the blood-brain-barrier, Gpld1 appears to increase brain health indirectly. One suspected mechanism is through a reduction in peripheral inflammation and blood coagulation. A new paper by @drvictoriasampson explores the link between poor oral health and developing COVID-19 complications. What do the risk factors associated with developing complications from COVID-19 such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure all have in common? Altered bacteria in the mouth. These COVID-19 risk factors also share similar dental complications such as periodontal disease and increased oral bacteria. This paper highlights the strong link between patients suffering from severe COVID-19 complications, and bacterial superinfections. Furthermore, new research has shown that high levels of oral bacteria are present in many patients suffering from COVID-19 complications such as pneumonia. This topic is something I discussed in my Detox Starter Series last month. I see it so often....people doing everything right... they are sweating, eating healthy, trying to take care of the gut, and hydrating, but things still arent working. Maybe theyre even taking binders, which helps, but maybe is not enough. ⠀ ⠀ There is a process called enterohepatic circulation that is not discussed enough. I think I got maybe 5 minutes of this topic in graduate school. This process is where all that toxicity that your lovely liver has bound up into a beautiful package is being released again in the intestines and sent back out into circulation and back through the liver yet again! So, basically, your liver is doing its job fairly well and packaging up those lovely toxins, sending them through the bile to the small intestine and then BAM, the GI system opens the package like a greedy kid on Christmas, recycles the bile and sends it back into circulation where the liver has to do it all over again (and the kidneys and lymphatics take a hit too!!). This IS a normal process b/c it is your bodys way of re-using the bile it created...the problem lies in the fact that our BILE is now TOXIC. So, we dont want to re-use that bile even though it is the most efficient way. We want to dump the bile with the toxins bound to it. ⠀ ⠀ So, why does this happen? Well, toxicity in general causes this issue b/c the toxicity is bound to the bile, but other things contribute too. It could be issues such as SIBO, parasites, chronic GI viral infections, or mold/candida colonized in the gut.⠀ ⠀ What can you do about it? calcium d glucarate 3x/day dosing, soluble fiber (think beans!) 4-6x/day dosing (1/4 cup beans each dose), some insoluble fiber (chia, flax, psyllium husk), intestinal binders like charcoal, fruit pectin or zeolite, and then of course a whole gut protocol to get rid of the bacteria that is releasing the beta-glucuronidase enzyme that could be part of what is causing the issue. ⠀ ⠀ Dont let your liver do the same work time and time again...look into your gut in order to help your liver! - @twopurplecarrots on Instagram

Our new case study just pubbed! Very excited about this one. We assessed a high-level natural bodybuilder over the course of one year on a wide-variety of outcomes; 8 months leading up to competing in 4 shows, and then 4 months post-competition. The case study provides extensive insights into the changes that occur during natural bodybuilding competition. Many interesting findings. One of the most intriguing is the effect on testosterone levels, as shown in the accompanying image. The competitor had a very normal testosterone level at the beginning of prep. However, when tested at the mid-point of his competition, after months of hard training and dieting, his testosterone dropped to hypogonadal levels normally seen in elderly men. Then, just a month after finishing competition and restoring his normal nutritional regimen, his testosterone levels were back to normal. Its not clear whether the drop in testosterone was due to a specific factor with training or diet (e.g. reduction in carbs vs fat?), or more likely a combination of the entire process. But it really highlights how adaptable the body is to lifestyle alterations and its ability to recover quickly to reversal of change. Huge thanks to an all-star cast of co-authors who helped to pull all aspects of the study together into a cohesive narrative. now that the days are getting colder and autumn is approaching, chances are, depressive episodes are coming for me. winter is my biggest depression trigger ever, and swedish winter is hellish to me (and like, most of us living here). i decided to sit down a little while ago and write down all my personal depression signs so i can be more mindful of when it might happen. it seems - well, depressing, to plan for depressive episodes, but that’s life with bipolar disorder. you gotta stay on top of your moods. i am a huge advocate for understanding your mental illness and knowing your triggers, warning signs, and symptoms. when i start feeling depressed, my extrovert heart grows uninterested in social interaction, and when i find myself around others i just feel so incredibly dull, bored and tired of playing the character that is myself. my energy is low and my motivation is pretty much zero. dishes pile up, teeth get that fuzzy feeling from not being brushed enough, room starts looking like a pigsty, it’s a whole mess. but once i realize that i might be depressed, the easier it gets to start fighting back, because you have to fight that damn depression until your will to retain your normal self is stronger than depression’s grip of your psyche. knowing what your depression looks like when it starts creeping up is really important. these are my signs of an incoming depression, what are your signs ? • • • #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthawareness #psynligt #nostigma #mentalhealthwarrior #recovery #art #digitalart #artistsoninstagram #comic #crazyheadcomics - @crazyheadcomics on Instagram

Anxiety Attack vs. Panic Attack ⬇️ A panic attack is an intense and sudden feeling of fear, terror, or discomfort accompanied by several other mental and physical symptoms. The symptoms of panic attacks are often so extreme that they cause severe disruption. According to the DSM-5, a panic attack is characterized by four or more of the following symptoms: Feelings of unreality (derealization), Feeling detached from oneself (depersonalization), Fear of losing control or going crazy, Fear of dying (mental symptoms) and Heart palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate, Excessive sweating, Trembling or shaking, Sensations of shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, Feeling of choking, Chest pain, Nausea or abdominal distress, Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint, Numbness or tingling sensations (paresthesias), Chills, Hot flashes (physical symptoms). In contrast, anxiety generally intensifies over a period of time and is highly correlated with excessive worry about some potential danger—whether real or perceived.3 If the anticipation of something builds up and the high amount of stress reaches a level where it becomes overwhelming, it may feel like an attack. The symptoms of anxiety may include the following: Difficulty concentrating, Irritability, Restlessness (mental symptoms) and Fatigue, Muscle tension, Disturbed sleep, Increased startle response, Increased heart rate, Dizziness (physical symptoms).
