As a kid I used to ride my bike to the top of the Tourne Park in northern NJ where you could get a glimpse of the twin towers. It was a different type of beauty than I get now in the Wasatch, but it was beautiful and majestic nonetheless. 19 years ago that skyline was forever changed. Today I will remember all of the first responders running IN to save lives as others were running FOR their lives. Mr. Rogers said it best, “look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping.” Today I will remember and honor the 343 firefighters and 73 police officers who lost their lives trying to help others (not including others who have since passed from side effects). Today I will honor the families of all of the brave men and women who lost loved their loved ones 19 years ago. Today I will remember how our country came together and unified in the aftermath. Today I will choose to remember and acknowledge all of the good that is in people. N E V E R 🙏 F O R G E T In 2001, I was required to do an internship for school credit for my Master’s in Social Work. I was assigned to work at the WTC Tower 7 for a company called DC-11. September 10th was my first day. It was orientation and I recall how excited I was to work with lawyers and help their clients with some of the challenges they were facing. At the end of my day, at around 5pm I had this urge to go over to the shopping area of World Trade Center. I scanned around and it was empty as it was the end of the work day. I felt quite alone and had odd thoughts kept circling around my head. I wasn’t sure why I felt compelled to go there but didn’t dwell on it. I shrugged these feelings off and thought perhaps it was because I had some anxiety. I decided to walk home along the West Side Highway and once again felt odd. I saw the most eerie sky. The clouds swirled angrily, and I got caught in an intense downpour. It was then I came to the conclusion some trouble was brewing. It was a stroke of luck that I wasn’t assigned to go in the very next day, Tuesday, September 11th. My dad woke me up and screamed to turn on the TV. I couldn’t help to feel blessed that I narrowly avoided being caught in such a tragedy. My supervisor said she experienced a lot of trauma and witnessed the awful details that we all know too well. The post traumatic stress was too much for her to bear and she had resign. In some way, shape or form, we are all affected by what happened on this day 19 years ago, and still it doesn’t get any easier being in NY. Where were you that day? What do you remember from it? I remember going to the dentist and playing outside on the little train wondering why my mom seemed distracted and asking her why there was smoke in the sky. I remember going home and learning building in NYC were hit, being sent away from the TV when I saw someone jump out of the building. I remember my big sister had to get picked up in person from school cause so many of her peers would not have parents. I remember the release for my mom when she learned my dads meeting had been moved from the World Trade Center to uptown the day before. That he was safe just wouldn’t make it out of the city for days. I have these memories still in my mind from 19 years ago. It’s crazy to think of how much has happened now my life and the fact I still clearly remember lots of little snippets from that day. I honor and commemorate our friends parents who never came home after that day. I cannot believe it’s been 19 years since 9/11. What a memorable day for all the wrong reasons. Like so many people that day in NYC, I left for work before the first plane struck. I lived in Kingsbridge (Bronx) and worked in Brooklyn at the time. On typical day, It would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to work. I would take the number 1 or 9 train to 14th Street and transfer to the F train to Dumbo to @fatbeats When I finally transferred to the F train, the train conductor announced that there are no more trains running in NYC. Keep in mind, I still have no idea the Towers have been struck! Also I had never heard this before. So like everyone I went upstairs to call my office to say I’m going to be late but when I got upstairs not only could I not get through to my office but I also had never seen so many people on the street in NYC. I am still not knowing or aware of what was happening. I was just concerned about getting to work on time. Then I saw a line for a pay phone and stood in it. However, I heard the most horrific scream ever from 6th Ave (I was on 14th), and I went to see what it was. I just happen to look up and literally saw the second Tower fall. Obviously, I was beyond freaked out and still not knowing what was going on!. People all around me were losing their minds! It was straight chaos. Once I collected myself together, I went and sat on someone’s stoop. I was literally talking to myself and trying to figure out what to do! After pulling it together I walked.up the block. Today, Friday, marks the 19th anniversary of the most horrific terrorist attack on American soil. On that September morning, 2,996 people lost their lives and more than 6,000 were injured. A day that dawned with crisp, clear blue skies quickly became filled with unimaginable tragedy. It showed us the worst in humankind. Had we not, at that time, evolved beyond using people and planes as bombs? It also showed us the best of human nature as strangers helped one another as much as possible seek safety and shelter. In Greenwich that Tuesday morning, it was quiet after the attacks. With so many neighbors and friends working in New York City, we were transfixed before our television screens, watching the events unfold. Traffic into the City was non-existent. The normal noise from I-95 was replaced with a steady stream of sirens and military helicopters headed in the direction of city. Thirty-four people with ties to Greenwich died that day. Thirty-four people did not return to their loved ones. Wives lost husbands, mothers lost sons, sisters’ brothers, sons’ fathers and fathers lost daughters. Their losses cannot be replaced; they left our entire community mourning and grasping to comprehend the enormity of what happened. We need to do more than “not forget.” We need to teach. Four years ago, a radio station in Oklahoma posted on social media that this is the first year that middle school students in their schools are learning about September 11 as an historical event. They were not alive when it occurred. We are impressed that a school district in Oklahoma is doing this. If we do not actively teach about September 11, then its history, meaning and loss will begin to fade in importance. In a community where 34 people with ties to it died, and a memorial stands in their honor, we should actively teach about the terrorist attacks, and every student should visit Cos Cob Park to understand how directly it affected our community. In the 2003 design competition, Team Twin Towers proposed rebuilding the towers with bioterrorism sensors and fireproof ceramic polymer coatings around the columns, floor beams and stairs. Similarly, the 2005 Twin Towers II proposal was nearly identical to the original design by Minoru Yamasaki, although with 115 stories—5 floors taller than the original. An above-ground memorial would have occupied the footprints of the original towers and three twelve-story postmodern buildings replacing 3, 4, and 5 WTC. The project was sponsored by Donald Trump who labeled the SOM/David Childs-designed Freedom Tower as disgusting. The Freedom Tower was the winner of an international design contest sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. In media appearances, Trump criticized the proposed Freedom Tower, saying “It doesn’t represent what we want to have represented. Never forget & pay tribute. In our hearts rests the victims of 9/11, the heroes who risked their lives to save others and the families whom forever lost their loved ones. On 9/11 - I was in fourth grade eating breakfast before school when the first plane hit the first tower. My mother watched in horror and was screaming at our little television. My father was flying to Boston at the time of the attack. With no cell phones (and particularly no service after this occurrence) nor any WiFi my mom couldn’t get in contact with my dad. For hours she panicked wondering if he was safe & also was heartbroken while watching thousands of people suffer. As a child I just couldn’t understand this event. I believed it was just an accident... In 2018 I visited #nyc and went to the @911memorial it truly was one of the most incredibly put together museums I have seen - the feeling I had as I walked through reading, watching, and listening to the panic & pain our country experienced could only be transferred. Now more than ever we need to come together and fuel peace. I can only hope and also act towards this. It’s 4 am on September 11th and as I sit in a fire engine on a Wildland fire in Southern California looking for hot spots I think of the phrase “never forget”. 19 years ago on September 11th I was studying to become a paramedic and didn’t realize my path was leading me to become a firefighter. After that day it was clear to me that the war I knew of good vs evil from back home was now here in the USA. You see as a young Jewish kid I was very familiar with the phrase “never forget” my family was nearly completely exterminated by the nazis and if it wasn’t for my grandmother being the sole survivor of her family my whole family wouldn’t be here today. It’s because of this I don’t take the term never forget lightly. So to my fellow first responders and country: May we never forget the tremendous loss of first responders and civilians that day. May we never forget the families they left behind. May we never forget that we must constantly train to be ready for the next challenge. May we never forget that evil still exists and wants to harm us. May we never forget that as first responders this job has never been about us, but about serving others. May we never forget that it doesn’t matter how good the technology and equipment we have, it still boils down to us being able to make critical decisions under stress. May we never forget the traditions of our brotherhood. May we never forget why we signed up to do this job. May we never forget the sacrifices of those that came before us and may we never forget how united we were and can still be like on September 12th 2001 when we lifted each other and got back up as a united country.
