Gray skies are gonna clear up. It has been an intense stretch of time and I think we can for the most part agree that being a part of such a historical period in time does not make for smooth waters. Or clear skies. It has been a lot of struggle for a long time now. The thing about clouds is they cannot be trusted . They are beautiful, or they are funny, they can be ominous or uplifting. Our emotions are much the same thing. They can fool us into believing that they are facts. When they are more like the ever changing clouds, a shifting filter. In these hard times you are not alone. In your darkest hour you are not alone. We are a part of history we may not want to be a part of, but, like all those before us we do not get to choose our time. Scrambling to leave to the pits? I’m afraid that I’ll have to wait a fair bit longer before I will again cast my eyes upon scenes like these. As expected, the only remaining fixture on my 2020 motorsport calendar has also been cancelled. This means that the Zandvoort Historic Grand Prix was the first as well as the last motorsport meeting that I attended this season. And to do that, I neither had to travel nor sleep in another bed... So now, a long winter lies ahead as well as an uncertain future for my beloved sport. Modern motorsport will survive in some way, I’m sure about that - that was resumed from July and will continue down to late December, simply to make up for lost time. It will happen under the strictest of regimes, though - each and every attendant will need to be tested, have their temperature taken daily, wear a face mask at all times and remain in their team or organiser bubble all weekend. That’s all very well when you’re in it to win it, but it’s hardly any fun - and fun is what historic motorsport is about, the winning only comes second. And that’s why my weekend at Monza was cancelled. Not because it was unsafe - the north of Italy is now arguably the safest part of Europe! - but because the historic races there would have been the support races to the modern Monza 4 Hours race of the European Le Mans Series. Meaning that we would have had to adhere to those same strict modern rules. No fun in that, so we’re not going... And with travel restrictions hurting historic racing harder too, it doesn’t paint a happy picture at all. Things lately have been looking pretty different for me. 🥴 I’ve been one to slam weights, pick up the heavy shit & preach the benefits of doing so. But lately I’ve had to step back from what I have a serious passion for doing, helps me show up daily for my kids & has been my biggest therapy. It’s been a giant reminder why movement is so incredibly beneficial, regardless of whether you’re getting your ass up and walking around your yard, walking on the treadmill or just dancing around. Don’t quit doing something just because the “ideal” situation of what you’d want isn’t your current reality. Don’t quit because you have to change your course & it’s not the path you wanted to take. ....... I was obsessed with the road and all the bullshit that it entailed. Sometimes to a fault. Never wanted to cancel a show even when it was playing to nobody, because I always hoped that the bartender or sound guy (if there was one) would tell someone about ATDI. @metallica, @larsulrich and Master of Puppets started all my dreaming. Years later @queensofthestoneage and Sparta were on tour together in Europe and @troyvanleeuwen and I were at a bar after one of two shows in Paris and ran into @tommorello while ordering. Audioslave was also in Paris playing! I asked Tom “who was behind the velvet ropes” and he Metallica was. I looked at Troy and said you have to get me back there. He knew @robtrujillo and got us back there. The first person I met was @kirkhammett. After speaking for a sec, I was in shock that he knew who the hell I was. Every childhood dream coming true. Moments later I met Lars and he invited us to a show the next day. They were doing a press run for Some Kind of Monster and were playing 4 shows in one day all around Paris. I got off stage at the venue we were playing at the next night, changed, and Paul and I took a cab to a venue where ATDI had played years before and we watched Metallica start the show with Blackened. Paul and I were on cloud nine. Later we got spend the whole night with Lars and crew at a bar. I think we got back to our hotel right before lobby call so we could catch a plane to Sweden to play a festival. That day I met @prongtheband. Another band I obsessed with as a kid. A couple of years ago I vowed to try and stop buying as much fast fashion. I’ve always loved vintage clothes but this was still something I did far too much. SEX IS SACRED The feminine energy is on the rise and we’re collectively healing the years of suppression and trauma of the past centuries. For the feminine energy to be equal so we can truly co-create. So we can actually birth a new world together which is what’s happening now. Part of this labour is dismantling the conditioning around our sexual energy. It’s the upside down, inside out world that has led us to believe sexuality is shameful and dirty. That it’s not safe to be sexual. That it’s wrong to be sexual as a woman while it’s expected to always want ‘it’ as a man, creating the rape culture we live in today. Where victim blaming and slut shaming is still prevalent. Where sex is used in many toxic ways by men and by women for manipulation and power abuse. While sex is sacred and our sexual energy is the most powerful energy we have. It literally creates life. Imagine the creation power it has and what it means if we remove the shame, guilt, abuse and conditioning. What it could mean for us and the world when we start to use this energy for the good. Imagine what kind of world we could create together 🔥 I know for me it’s time to go more into this because it has been such a big topic throughout my life. Both my pregnancies and births have healed so much already and I know this is the work that the world needs right now. My favorite usage of one of my pics. SI cover. Throughout the 3 week race in 2003, my first Tour de France, I very often had in the back of my mind the Sports Illustrated cover because Mike Powell got a Lance cover for the 2000 race. Considering that Armstrong, if he won, would be winning it for the fifth time, tying the record, the odds were pretty good that SI would have Lance on the cover again and one of the shooters covering the Tour would capture that image. We considered that the ultimate prize. I was always searching for the perfect vertical image of Armstrong. On the second to last day, the time trial would determine if Lance could hang on to his lead and beat Jan Ullrich for the overall win. @twobaddogs Doug Pensinger, who I was covering the Tour with that year and who taught me everything I know about shooting the Tour, told me that the photo motos usually stay behind the last starting cyclist and it’s impossible to shoot from the side while on the Moto during a TT. Even with the rain, for that day, for whatever reason they made an exception and let the motos a few times shoot next to Lance. I got a couple of cracks at it. I never even thought that this picture might be used in that way but it worked. “The picture within the picture”. SI ended up smartly cropping this horizontal image from the TT. When I got home that issue and the previous one with a double page Leading Off were waiting for me. I was pretty happy...
