TWO COMMON SQUAT MISTAKES 😖 This week is the start of a new block in Stronger by the Day (the very last block of our squat/glute hypertrophy focus)! đŸ’ȘWhether youre already part of our crew or youre just looking to improve your squat, we thought wed share two common mistakes we see in the squat, and how you can fix them!⁣ ⁣ 👉Common Mistake #1: Reckless Unrack ⁣ ⁣ Approach the bar with clear focus and intent. Square your feet up under the bar and lift the weight straight up out of the rack with control so that the weight feels light coming out of the rack. Do not unrack recklessly, allowing the bar to bounce. Proceed with confidence as soon as the bar is on your shoulders. Once the bar is unracked, let the bar settle before you initiate any steps backward.⁣ ⁣ 👉Common Mistake #2: Breathing Improperly ⁣ ⁣ Before each rep, take a deep breath and focus on bracing. You’ll take a BIG DEEP breath, aiming to fill the lowest pit of your belly. If you’re wearing a belt, you’ll want to think about expanding your abs and low back to create 360-degrees of pressure between your trunk and the belt. HOLD the breath while engaging (bracing) your core, and then begin your descent. Once you’ve completed the rep, breath out.⁣ ⁣ When you breathe in, you’re applying abdominal pressure in order to keep your core tight, which helps keep your spine safe. It is important to know the difference between breathing into your chest and breathing into your stomach. Ive been using this bells of steel equipment for the last 7 weeks, and I must say Im quite impressed. Usually you expect to get what you pay for with fitness equipment, but I feel like BOS has given me quite a bit more value for the price (especially here in Canada). After Scouring the internet for the perfect squat rack to fit the space I had available, I found the line of racks bells of steel had available, and to my suprise THEY ACTUALLY FIT THE HEIGHT OF MY BASEMENT! As a guy who is 66 it was a STRUGGLE to find a rack that is tall enough for me, but short enough to fit on top of a 2.5 platform without hitting the low ceiling. You may have seen this in my IG story this weekend, but I recently got into a debate on Reddit about what qualifies as an outdoor workout. In my opinion, just because something is physically demanding or burns a lot of calories doesn’t mean you can conveniently make it count as your outdoor workout. I.e. mowing the lawn, or playing a round of golf. To me, the thought process behind that is, “well I was going to do this thing anyway, and it is physically challenging and I get really tired doing it, and since it’s outdoors I’ll just count that as my outdoor workout.” Thats a complete and total cop out. What is the point of that?? Listen
 maybe if you aren’t doing 75 Hard and you want to count that as your workout for the day, whatever, but the whole point of the PROGRAM (it is a PROGRAM, not a CHALLENGE) is to choose the more difficult option when faced with a choice. At the end of the day, if you have to ask yourself, “does this count?” THEN IT DOESN’T COUNT. The funny thing to witness was how many people in the thread downvoted me for saying that. It’s just disappointing to see that. Dude, don’t even do the program if that’s the case. Just go follow whatever rules in life you want to follow

CHOCOLATE MILK ‱ Old gym pic because I’m missing it a lot. Mine opens back up June 1st, but I’m unsure if I’ll go back so soon due to my city quickly becoming a hot spot. This article was written in 2006 so we obviously have more information now, but I thought it’d be a fun article to share! ‱ ‱ Let me summarize a study on chocolate milk as an exercise recovery aid. Exercise performance is influenced by stored glycogen in the muscles which decreases in response to intense exercise. Glycogen resynthesis occurs most rapidly when carbohydrates are consumed within an hour post-workout. ‱ ‱ For this study, after an intense workout (and recovery period of 2 hours) they had subjects drink either chocolate milk, a fluid replacement drink, or a carbohydrate replacement drink (the carb content for both the milk and carb replacement drink were the same) and then begin cycling at 70% their VO2 max (max rate of oxygen consumption). ‱ ‱ It was shown that the subjects who drank chocolate milk cycled approx 50% longer than the other test groups, regardless of the carbohydrate count being the same amount the replacement drink and the milk (the fluid replacement drink had less carbs). The total work performed during the cycling bouts were also about 50% greater than the other groups. ‱ ‱ Now the sample size here was small, but it’s kind of a fun study to think about. I wonder if mixing my post-workout protein powder in milk instead of water has been helping with recovery? Something to think about. 😉 - @healthyginga on Instagram

A Outra RazĂŁo Ă© fisiolĂłgica, vocĂȘ nĂŁo tem um condicionamento amplo (GPP). VocĂȘ ou seu coach ou ambos priorizaram uma via metabĂłlica em detrimento da outra. Um CrossFitter deve ter a capacidade de “virar a chave”, virar rĂĄpido e sem perder performance. Deve seu corpo fazer muita força (ATP), tambĂ©m se mover com intensidade moderada (GlicogĂȘnio) e sustentar grandes tempos de treino ( oxidativo). Mais importante, alternar esses estĂ­mulos sem “sofrer”. VocĂȘ pode ter uma limitação de Mindset ou fisiolĂłgica ou os dois. Se Coach deve transformar o seu desconforto em conforto, e achar um novo desconforto.... e repetir esse ciclo infinitamente 😅 Atletas de competição geralmente sĂŁo mais expostos a essas fraquezas com treinos direcionados. Alunos regulares sĂŁo expostos de forma mais suave a suas fraquezas e tem um horizonte maior para “se acomodar” onde nĂŁo gosta. Quer evoluir? Esteja confortĂĄvel com o desconfortĂĄvel. Lateral Power!⚡ Todays post is all about that side-side movement! ↔Working on your lateral movement is important for field/court based athletes that no doubt have to move laterally or cut and change direction throughout the game. Its also something that is not so commonly worked on, with too many weekend warriors only training in a sagittal plane ↕ In addition, by working on exercises such as these, not only will you be improving your ability to drive and push off laterally... but you will also be conditioning your bodys ability to absorb and produce force in such a mannor, thereby reducing your risk of injury. We must unfortunately cancel the 2020 Summer Open Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships. While BC has progressed to phase 3 of its restart plan, there are still many restrictions in place that prevent us from providing a safe atmosphere for a powerlifting competition that follows provincial guidance. We are making the decision now to cancel Summer Open so competitors aren’t burdened with making training and travel plans. BC is considered a leader worldwide in its approach to combating the spread of coronavirus, and we thank our members for being a part of the process and solution. Please continue to observe the guidance of our provincial health officer so we can return to competition as soon as possible! Next #AthleteSpotlight of the week goes to Henry (@el_hennywise)! He graduated in Dec 2019 with a BS in Molecular Biology and plans on Applying to medical school in 2021. He spends most of his time at the Agape Free Clinic in Downtown Dallas and keeping up with his piano skills. A fun fact about him is that he can sleep anywhere. His goals for SMP are chasing a 700+ squat (American Record if possible) , 450 bench, 700 deadlift, and just pushing himself become a stronger person in general. He has gained a 150 lb total since joining SMP. His favorite part about being in SMP is the camaraderie: Were all working towards a common goal of becoming the strongest versions of ourselves. Have you made mistakes or fallen short of your goals? đŸ™‹â€â™€ïž Yup, me too, & ninja this year was one of those. A split second pause (my mind said dont rush it like I have in Vegas), & as soon as the moment passed, I knew that I shouldve jumped. It was hard to fall so early, not get a buzzer, & not move on to the next round (my 1st yr, season 5, is the only time I didnt move on. So many of us fell on the 5th obstacle & I didnt go fast enough). Knowing it could be my last season for a year or more, I put even more pressure on myself to do well & leave on a high note, but God had other plans! 😂 . I also had a peace from God that it was ok, despite my competitive nature being sad. I have been blessed with so many incredible experiences on ninja: Ive met wonderful people, have gotten to hit 4 buzzers (including a city finals buzzer 😍 a long time goal), have gone to awesome events, have prayed & shared hearts with so many, & have played on some fun obstacles (including stage 3, another long time goal!). 💞 I have been very blessed, & I am sooo grateful for every experience on ninja, even the ones that didnt go the way I hoped, because they challenged & grew me. . I know many ninjas who are talented & strong, & have gone out early on the show. All of us have experienced that at some point, whether on the show or at a gym comp. So many havent gotten to show the world what they are capable of, & regardless whether they get to or not, itll be ok! 💓 The ninja community knows how ninja goes, & that one fall doesnt define you. We know that disappointments are inevitable, & its ok to be sad about it. Disappointments teach us, they make us stronger if we let them, & they give us even more fire & motivation to train harder or better. . I love how ninja applies to life. In these videos listen as @mikecerbus highlights the extended support position you will see a majority of high level athletes executing. For some, this position comes natural and develops over years of repetition. However, many athletes are starting to snatch later in life and may need to take some time to investigate best positions. This training is specifically to familiarize the mind and body of the important these positions have for efficiency and longevity in sport. Tuesday’s top 5 tips to fat loss: 1. Calorie deficit: Ensure that you are expending more energy than you are consuming. To set yourself up for success here, a sustainable deficit is typically 10-20% taken from maintenance calories. 2. Monitor your NEAT: Non-exercise activity thermogenesis is everything that isn’t your structured exercise routine. Everything OUTSIDE of the gym is included here: Your steps, brushing your teeth, doing the dishes, going shopping, fidgeting, using a standing desk etc. 3. RECOVERY: To get your body into parasympathetic mode, AKA: rest and recover to decrease stress hormones, we need to be balancing out stressors with de-stressors. Ensure you are getting 7+ hours of sleep, appropriate macronutrient distribution to facilitate recovery (yes this is important, especially on low calories), adequate hydration, 20 minutes of sunshine, and plenty of YOU time (or things that you find relaxing). 4. Appropriate training routine: Weight training is especially important while dieting to maintain muscle mass. When we diet, we are at an increased risk of losing hard earned muscle tissue which is what gives us that ‘toned’ look. To minimise muscle loss, strength training is recommended. It will also help preserve a higher metabolic rate, strength and healthy blood work profile. 5. CONSISTENCY: This is the most important of all. You can have the perfect calories, perfect food choices, perfect training routine and activity levels, but if you aren’t consistent with your diet, it’s all for nothing. Imagine if you only showed up to work Monday, but by Friday had quit? Not a very successful approach, and I don’t think your boss would appreciate it. Commit to your diet and be consistent, Then it’s about trusting the process. Having someone to keep you accountable here is key. A fat loss goal involves a transformation of your lifestyle. If you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. I love this photo of Om Yun Chol, mostly because I can hear so many coaches groaning at the degree that he has lifted his feet off the platform. What he is doing is an exaggeration of what every lifter is doing as they pull under the barbell: taking pressure off the platform in order to descend quickly. There has to be little to no pressure on the platform in order for a lifter to accelerate into a low squat position at high speed. In other words, all lifters have to free their feet and bodyweight from the platform in order to get under the barbell quickly. Some look like Om with an exaggerated lifting of the feet, others may appear to not pick up the feet at all, or in between these two extremes. However, for all lifters at this phase there is almost no force being applied against the platform. If this were to happen, the descent will be slowed or there will be a sudden braking inhibiting the lifter from getting into a low squat position. A high speed of descent and improving this aspect of technique can allow a lifter to be successful lifting maximum weights moving at lower bar speeds. WPC DM 2020 in Plettenberg @deniseherber_ sollte eigentlich auch performen, aus privaten GrĂŒnden hat es aber leider nicht geklappt und ich musste mit unseren Athleten alleine anreisen. Nach 4 Jahren mein Comeback und das alleine. 😖 Ohne die Person, welche eigentlich jede Sekunde bei mir sein soll.. đŸ‘©đŸŒâ€đŸ€â€đŸ‘šđŸ» nie wieder ohne Girl! Das steht fest! Von 115kg innerhalb von 5 Tagen auf 104,7kg gecutet (mit WaterCut, nicht einfach nachmachen) und am Ladetag den ganzen Tag unsere Athleten betreut. Voller Erfolg, es war aber anstrengend. Der nĂ€chste Tag war mein Tag! BankdrĂŒcken hab ich mir 210kg mindestens vorgenommen, es wurden aber nur 200kg gĂŒltig im ersten Versuch. Technikfehler meinerseits und da habe ich den Cut wirklich gemerkt. Egal, war nur Bank. Seht selbst im Video! Kreuzheben. 300kg easy Opener đŸ„œ, 315kg easy zweiter Versuch đŸ„œ und im dritten wollte ich den deutschen Rekord in der -110kg Klasse angehen. 325,5kg. Da ich mir vorher im ersten Versuch komplett die Daumeninnenseite vom HookGrip aufgerissen habe und wie wild am bluten war, war der Griff etwas schlechter und mir gingen, obwohl 325,5kg immer noch zu leicht waren, die HĂ€nde auf. Ärgerlich, aber egal. 340kg ist das nĂ€chste Ziel! SAFE! Sometimes I’ll get ppl ask me if I’ll compete in powerlifting again ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Honestly.. I don’t think so for the time being.⁣ ⁣⁣ I just don’t have the same spark for it that I used to. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve been going back and fourth about it for ages (last 2 years) and honestly it just isn’t as much of a passion compared to before, when I lived and breathed it. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I still love the sport - it changed my life and allowed me to grow a lot as a person -⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It taught me sacrifice, discipline, showed me how much was possible if I really put my mind to it, and gave me a taste of what it really meant to give 1000% of your heart and energy into something. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In my last year in the u23, I swore I’ll never be one of those ppl who go into the open and then disappear or quit the sport. ⁣ ⁣ I guess everyone has their own path, and in my case I went down the path of growing a fitness and business consulting business which, today, has changed hundreds of lives as well as given my team members full time jobs where they can work from anywhere.⁣ ⁣ powerlifting organically just took a backseat, something I tried to fight for ages because I didn’t wanna fully let it go.⁣ ⁣ But I don’t see myself ever competing or participating in the sport as intensely as I used to. ⁣ ⁣ I’m still doing powerlifting type training at the gym. ⁣ ⁣ But for now, I’ll be hanging up my powerlifting belt (next to my medals 😈)⁣ ⁣ Massive respect to everyone I ever met in powerlifting and those who are still participating in the sport⁣ ⁣ But for now ..Brb, platform.⁣ ⁣ Ps- this photo was taken by my coach @jim_rts at the IPF world powerlifting championships, who took me from baby lifter to international lifter breaking british records & stuff. đŸ’„Constant Tension ExercisesđŸ’„âŁ ⁣ This form of exercise certainly has its place in the overall strength and conditioning programming continuum. There just must be a rhyme and reason for doing so.⁣ ⁣ Constant tension exercises allow for a quick and effective way to bring the involved structures (i.e., muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.) to mechanical fatigue in short order. In some case, the end result may even be mechanical failure, depending on the dosage.⁣ ⁣ The constant tension technique avoids the typical lockout at the top (or end range) of each rep. Essentially, you perform each rep in an oscillation format by utilizing roughly 75% of the range of motion only. In doing so, this keeps the involved structures in a constant state of work while never reaching full contraction.⁣ ⁣ For example, in a typical squat you would stand tall and lockout the knees at the top. You would do the same in a typical bench press by straightening the arms and locking out the elbows at the top of each rep. In constant tension exercises, you would deliberately avoid this typical lockout on purpose in order to keep stress on the involved structures.⁣ ⁣ Constant tension exercises are simply another way to impose stress on the body.
