When I was eight years old, I entered a Qantas stamp design competition because first prize was a ride in the front seat of a four seater Cessna 172 and second prize was a seat behind the pilot. I wasn’t very artistic but I was determined to give it a go and I won second prize. Ever since then I wanted to sit in the pilot seat. So began a lifelong passion for all things aviation. I joined Qantas in 1984 on the 747 as one of the first female pilots. I used to get a few peculiar looks from passengers when they saw me walking in to the cockpit. Nowadays people don’t bat an eyelid. I’ve flown the 747 for the majority of my career and am so honoured to be flying our very last 747 to the US. When I step off that plane and say goodbye for the last time, some of that Mojave desert dust might get in my eye. Entre os amigos sou conhecida como aquela que ama uma ter uma sarna pra se coçar. Isso porque vivo com mil ideias, quero transformar as coisas em outras, sonho em tirar projetos do papel... e é meio tudo-ao-mesmo-tempo-agora. Sempre brinco que meu carro não tem freio, nem ré; ele só tem acelerador. Não sei se consigo ser diferente. Nem sei se isso é uma qualidade ou um mega defeito. Gosto do movimento da cozinha, seus cheiros, barulhos... tudo, enfim! Gosto de pensar na cozinha como o cômodo mais ‘vivo’ de uma casa. Afinal, é de lá que saem receitas que nos abastecem não só de nutrientes para viver, mas também de histórias que nos remetem a pessoas e lugares. Assim sendo, se em 2018 idealizei e lancei “Palavras com açúcar”, agora chegou a hora de entregar mais conteúdo, mais poesia e mais carinho... tudo em forma de receitas simples, gostosas e descomplicadas. Algumas herdei da minha mãe; outras fui garimpando aqui e ali. O resumo disso é o despertar para uma cozinha pé no chão, com sabor de feito em casa. Quem se importa se aquela receita saiu imperfeita? Importa é que foi feita... não é assim? “Palavras com açúcar... e uma pitada de sal” é a continuação do que sonhei há 2 anos e que permanece fazendo parte dos meus dias. Se em 2018 eram 15 receitas, em 2019, 16, agora o material completo soma 33 receitas que tem como linha condutora a singeleza, sem tirar nem por. Sim, a minha sarna é isso: trabalhar para conseguir traduzir receitas em memorias. Se não fosse assim que graça teria? Before cakes, and even until about two years ago, I spent over a decade in media consulting. Much of that time was spent in front of a two-way mirror, interviewing consumers about television shows, talent, websites, apps, advertising... basically anything media related! I started when I was 23 and was the youngest moderator at the time. I had so much to learn, and I did learn - a ton! I can tell you what makes a successful show, why viewers tune in, why they’re likely to be drawn to a certain character or host, what type of ads are impactful, what consumers look at first when they go to a website, etc. But my time traveling the country, interviewing complete strangers, spending time away from my family taught me a lot more about life than I ever expected. I am a formerly incarcerated Black woman and I am the founder and C.E.O of Reentry Rocks. The word freedom holds incredible weight to me and my formerly incarcerated staff. We know, firsthand, what it feels like to come home after decades of incarceration only to have our spirits incarcerated by fear of violence against us and our families. We may no longer be in prison, but we are far from free. Last week, as I watched George Floyds family speak at his memorial service in Minneapolis, I was moved by their memories of sharing food together. Cooking has always been my truest expression of love and so in honor of George Floyd and all those before him who have died at the hands of police, I have renamed my most loved recipe the George Floyd Banana Pudding and will be donating 50% of all banana pudding proceeds to the Floyd family. I had the best preceptorship experience! Thankful to have met my lovely preceptor ❤️ She definitely welcomed me with open arms as well as challenged me during my preceptorship in the Emergency Department. It is normal as a nursing student to have feelings of not being accepted or a burden to the nursing staff, the whole “nurses eat their young”. I definitely did not experience that, I connected with everyone on this floor and did not want to leave (did more hours than I needed to). I was taught so much and they all believed in me and my skills to help out. I am truly blessed for this experience! For our Christmas family vacation, we headed to Walt Disney World. As everyone knows, Disney World can get a bit expensive, so finding ways to save on our Disney vacation without cutting back on any of the magic was important to us. @theforresterchronicles Through careful planning, we were able to make our spending work for us. We were able to fly to Disney World using our United MileagePlus points! We were able to accumulate points quickly through responsible and intentional credit card use. This allowed us to save money on our flights and sprinkle a little more magic during our time at Disney. The important thing here is to use your credit card responsibly and make it work for you on savings in the end. Please use caution when using this strategy as credit card debt is not the goal and should be avoided. Today was nothing short of magical. These past few months has been extremely challenging for so many people including myself. Finding ways to manage your sanity may come in different forms. But I feel my ancestors will always show me signs to remind me of my strength. And today I was able to appreciate being uncomfortable.... I was tired, hot, sweaty, angry, hurt, emotional and in pain. But I stood amongst the sea of protesters, I realized how important it is to do every thing in my power for our next generation. I can only hope and pray they dont experience this sickening feeling. The crowd of people were all ages and races, united seeking change with police brutality and systemic racism. I then noticed a 80+ year old black woman and all I could think was how much more pain she has endured with Americas racism, she showed up to show support to the families who lost love ones and fight against systemic oppression. How do you like my Coconut Cream Pie?! 🥥 Enjoy my simple recipe below! 👇🏿 Ingredients: 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut 3 cups half-and-half 2 eggs, beaten 3/4 cup white sugar 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked 1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread the coconut on a baking sheet and bake it, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 5 minutes. In a medium saucepan, combine the half-and-half, eggs, sugar, flour and salt and mix well. Bring to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes more. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in 3/4 cup of the toasted coconut and the vanilla extract. Reserve the remaining coconut to top the pie. I turned 37 last week. I usually celebrate with a week or month long list of festivities. This year, due to covid, i decided to lay low. I took the day off, laid on a float in the pool, took a nap and put on my pajamas until my sweet husband came home with ice cream cake and a Mexican food fiesta. September 6 is my “CancerVersary.” . “I wish I had better news, but the biopsy came back positive for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. You have breast cancer.” I will always love my friend and doctor, Catherine DeUgarte @cmdfertility for encouraging me to get a mammogram, even though I wasn’t yet 40, even though I had no family history of breast cancer and even though my symptoms weren’t traditional (no lump, but a dull, throbbing pain in my right breast). . Scans, tests, needles, hormones, embryo freezing, chemo infusions, chemical menopause, hot flashes, a gnarly infection that almost killed me, anti-depressants, disability paperwork, suicide attempts, daily radiation, bloodied skin peeling off my raw torso, amputation of my breasts, drains coming out of my body, weekly fluid fills, a second surgery, and then ANOTHER surgery, therapy, therapy, therapy, therapy, ptsd, AA meetings, estrogen pills, estrogen suppositories, estrogen injections, acupuncture, herbs, meditation, diet, vitamins, supplements, more needles, more tests, more insomnia, more nightmares, more triggers, more tears, more more more more.... And then cupcakes. . I still sometimes gloss over what we went through and what we are still going through. I am thankfully still cancer free. I have scars all over my body that trace my trauma like a timeline of emotional lashings. When people say, “how are you?” the answer is so long and complicated that, “I’m healthy and happy” is easiest. Because I AM healthy. And I AM happy. I have come so far, not just physically, but mentally. I know I didn’t get here alone. Tom, who was ALSO diagnosed with cancer a month after me, joined me on this roller coaster of hell with patience, humor and grace. I know that there are still challenges that we continue to face, but we’re getting better every day. And now September 6 is the day we get to have red velvet boob cupcakes, custom made by my favorite dessert spot, @hansencakesbakery. To all the warriors out there, I see you. To Dr D, I love you. My apartment is meant to be a hedonistic temple. Delicious food, high quality cannabis, and epic sex toys like my red @sybianofficial. Plus incense, a sex book library, crystal singing bowls, soft blankets, and cushy furniture. The Sybian is definitely one of the coolest attractions though. Last year at my housewarming party everyone took turns riding it, and even during quarantine I’ve had a couple people take the ride (including me, obviously!) That black box in the back right corner houses the Sybian and all its attachment and doubles as a side table!
