Glendronach 12yo . . . I picked up this sample because I wanted to know if it was worth spending £40 to get a bottle. A little late night #dram never hurt, and this former #whiskyoftheyear is definitely helping end the day on a high note. • • Cracking in to some #nikkafromthebarrel, a #japanesewhisky blend of single malt and single grain whiskeys that’s bottled at a healthy 51.4% ABV. It’s blended in the same way as a blended scotch, blending over 100 #whiskeys together aged in #bourbon, #sherry and other barrels to create its flavor. • • On the nose it’s very fruit forward from the sherry right off the bat coupled with vanilla, cocoa, some spice and a faint underlying hint of peat and alcohol. More fruit when it hits the palate- berries, dates, orange accompanied by caramel, vanilla, honey, cinnamon spice, and mimicking the nose there’s a light oak, peat and slight punch of #alcohol that comes in on the end leaving a sweet, dry, tingly finish. • • Extremely rich and flavorful, it’s no surprise this has won many awards. Uncle Nearest Whiskey from Tennessee. My daughter bought me this bottle as a Father’s Day gift. She had her own motives for buying it, and that’s fine. I believe that good whiskey is good whiskey. If it weren’t I would say so. This is excellent whiskey. it is 100 proof, when you first pour a glass it is very hot, there is a lot of alcohol, and if you don’t let it breathe you’ll get a nose full of rubbing alcohol. Once it has a minute or two to open up the aromas of vanilla and a slight smokiness come through. On the first taste, I found it to have a extraordinarily interesting bitter cherry finish with a bite in the middle of the tongue almost like rye. At first you might think that it is a strange combination, but let me tell you, it’s pretty damn good. The spices come through on subsequent sips but that background of what I can best describe as a bitter cherry note lingers. Some tasting notes have said that there is vanilla and clove, I didn’t notice the clove per se, but it did have some nuances of baking spices. It is not as hot in the mouth as you would think it would be by the nose. I paired the whiskey with the venerable Casa Cuevas Connecticut Gordo. #casacuevascigars does not make a bland or mild Connecticut cigar. It’s stood up exceptionally well to the bite of whiskey. It was an excellent pair. Happy Friday! I’m finishing out the week with a fresh cork pop on this @districtmagnus Batch 3 Murray Hill Club Special Release. Boasting only 1211 bottles this blend of 10-20 year old MGP Bourbon was finished in Malt and Cider casks. I found Master Blender Nancy Fraley’s tasting notes so interesting that I had to include them in this post: “It has aromas of creamy brown butter with cinnamon toast, vanilla shortbread, gingersnap cookie, and Italian biscotti drizzled with thick apple blossom honey. As the whiskey notes evolve in the glass, the floral and fruity top notes of apple blossom give way to deeper, darker shades of marzipan, pear tart, oatmeal raisin cookie, and caramel pudding with sea salt. The initial palate entry has hints of yeast acidity and dryness from the cider, but quickly gives way to sweeter, more aromatic flavors of quince marmalade, cast iron skillet-baked Southern peach cobbler with a buttery yeast biscuit crust, followed by ephemeral notes of Atlantic Ocean brine. The whiskey finishes in a trio of waves of acidity, sweetness, apple skin tannins, barrel spice, and saline.” Well there you go... Blanton’s Bourbon Score - Hit up the gift shop at @buffalotracedistillery and was lucky enough to purchase an @blantons_bourbon 375ml @kentuckyderby edition. Any day that you can find a Blanton’s Single Barrel is a good day, but this one is kind of special. The sticker states September Derby 2020. This is the only time in the Derby’s 146 year history that is has been held in September. Also, the buffalo on the sticker is wearing a mask. Hopefully, we won’t need them in the future. Willett Distillery Pure Kentucky, Kentucky Straight Bourbon, 107 Proof. The sleeper in the Willett family of whiskeys. This is a blend of two different rye second grain mash bills. One high-rye (38%) and one OG Willett recipe with 12% rye. The whiskeys are aged roughly 5-7 years in favorable locations in the rickhouses before being masterfully blended. The Willett Distillery makes a number of great whiskeys and some of them have become very recognizable names--the Family Estate, Noah’s Mill, Rowan’s Creek, and Johnny Drum, sll come to mind among others. With a lineup like that, coupled with 100 years of whiskey making history it’s hard to surprise people. But so often when I crack open a PK 107 and tell the person sipping with me that this is from the Willett distillery I am met with surprise and bewilderment. And customarily a request for another pour. Pure Kentucky was originally launched in the 90s as part of the new small batch collection from Willett. Bourbon at the time was growing globally and most of the early Pure Kentucky whiskey was shipped overseas. Part of the inspiration for the package came from overseas as well; nowhere is that more apparent than with the XO designation, a famous cognac mark meant to signify an extra aged or extra old brandy. Some of those same traits also pay homage to not just the provenance of the whiskey but also the long and storied history of the Willett family, who long ago started their journey into distilling in the brandy world. Pure Kentucky has a classic rich brown color and the proof is masked by sweet nose of oaky vanilla, cinnamon, toffee, and maple. The balanced rye in the mash bill comes through with floral notes and minty eucalyptus, rounded out by hints of dried fruits like cherry and apricot, and then a touch of walnut. The oak comes through quite a bit on the palate in many forms--leather, clove, and baking spices--all followed by vanilla, toffee, and a rich oily texture. From Danville, nestled in the middle of Kentucky, and home to one of the most exciting new whiskey distilleries. Though this endeavor is new, their company’s other business, Ferm Solutions, has spent the past three decades making distilleries around the world better. Recognized as the top fermentation experts in the world. They have seen what works and what doesn’t and then perfected on that. Their initial launch was in 2018 and it was this “wheated” bourbon BIB. It takes a great deal of confidence to launch a BIB as your foray into the whiskey category, and once you taste the whiskey, that confidence is warranted. To make such a fine whiskey, they exclusively employ a sweet mash fermentation, low barrel entry proof along with exhaustive barrel maintenance. It’s abundantly clear that Wilderness Trail set out with one mission in mind and that is to make great whiskey. Mission accomplished! The nature of being a single barrel each release will offer a unique flavor profile. You should expect to find a nose of vanilla, oak, some floral accents and consistently delivering flavors of caramel, pecans, vanilla, as well as subtle oak notes. Would like to thank the Bhakta team for giving me the opportunity to review their blend of 8 Armagnac vintages (1868, 1904, 1933, 1947, 1951, 1959, 1964, 1970) barrel 4: Galahad, bottled at 47.7 % abv and finished in Islay Scotch casks, from the private cellar of Raj Peter Bhakta . And yes, you heard me, they really do finish in Islay casks, giving it a uniquely smoky touch. Armagnac is a small-batch brandy, distilled from grapes in the Armagnac region of Gascony, France, and generally produced in small amounts using a different distillation process to Cognac, resulting in a smooth, complex spirit. On the nose you are instantly greeted, by a pleasant smell of butterscotch cookies gently cooking in the oven- just like entering grandma’s house. There are plenty of floral-citrus notes with a touch of vanilla, and a honey sweetness with a little of the smoke from the Islay barrel wafting in towards the end. On the palate there is a distinct oakiness, which is pleasantly interlaced with the floral sweetness and a little spice. This dram had me nosing for longer than normal, as it kept evolving with time. The finish was medium to long, with the notes from the Armagnac playing nicely with the flavors infused from the Islay cask, neither overwhelming the other. Bhakta, in my opinion, are producing some expectational Armagnac’s- a must try for any serious whisky connoisseur. The Islay cask seems to elevate an already wonderful spirit, into a whole new realm. Raj has built yet another wonderful brand, and I can imagine will far surpass any previous endeavors.
