Be proud—this is no easy feat. Surely, I wish I could tell you that it gets easier the longer it goes on—It doesn’t. But you will adapt. You will fall into your new rhythms and eventually, you will find small comforts at the center of what you previously believed to only ever be dire. Survival is native tongue and resilience, lingua franca. Yes, this will hurt but COME ON, you are stretching the bounds of your being! Take your time and be gentle. There’s no shortcut in this one. Here is where we are. The good news: you are already far more capable than you were several weeks ago. So now that your somatic knowledge has expanded, what impossibility will you attempt next? Draw your lines and then cross them. Make new ones and then hop those as well. Base23 works on this metaphor by installing a graphically abstract, oversized construction site in the room. For him, this symbolizes the as yet incomplete discussion and/or conflict, in terms of content it relates to the “repairing” and “renewing” of a place, in this case the solution to a problem, the “renewal” or “repair” of social interaction within a group of people. The symbol of a construction site is also confirmed by the chosen location: an empty garage that is torn down and gives way to a new building - in the figurative sense a new beginning. Inspired by his place of residence Berlin and the permanent location of large construction sites, house renovations and construction sites in road traffic/local traffic, the artist finds analogies of apparently banal things here and in previous projects. He puts them in a new context in order to irritate the viewer who knows this learned visual language from his own urban living space. This effect is enhanced by color, light and dimension. The work consists of two parts visually. When entering the room, everything appears white - the walls, the windows, the installation. The situation in which the viewer finds himself appears balanced and relatively calm. A UV-light switched in the interval and the darkening of the room make the “hidden” graphic elements applied with UV color abruptly visible on the installation. They visualize the luminous three-dimensional impression of a construction site and the character of a warning, a signal. #frames from the @aputure.lighting Nova P300C Commercial. I used lasers in previous music videos and decided it would be the perfect way to show off @aputure.lighting’s new Nova panel. By syncing the frequency of the laser with the shutter speed of the camera we were able to create beautiful blankets of light that surrounded the Nova. Stephen Knapp has been making work that is transformed by light for over thirty years, producing vibrant light installations he refers to as paintings. These large-scale works utilize minimal tools, harnessing simply light and dichroic glass to throw a multitude of colors against the walls and room. The installations are not sketched out beforehand or programmed by computer, but rather created during the installation process as Knapp moves intuitively to choreograph his intricate light patterns. “The fun of what I do with light, is that there is nothing in our visual memory that prepares us for what I’m doing,” said Knapp in a short film about his work. “The fact that what I create can just be done with light, that there is no paint on these panels, is absolutely astounding to people. What I am trying to do most of all here is challenge any traditional notion of perception. What is it? Is it real? Is it not real? Does it matter?” These works have been featured in solo exhibitions around the country including the Boise Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Naples Art Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Flint Institute of Art, among others. No doubt a loving jab at the pace I already seemed to be living life. Trouble With Time is about those mysterious experiences and uncanny perceptions of time, coming to terms with my inabilities to perceive or correctly manage my own, and how this dynamic effects relationships or personal growth. I paused writing this to search “temporal”, and found that in addition to meaning “relating to time”, the PRIMARY definition is “relating to worldly as opposed to spiritual affairs; secular.” …which is fascinating, because this infers that time is of that which is the opposite of spiritual. Regular. Worldly. So although many of us constantly strive to understand and align ourselves with the spiritual realm, our empirical experiences are lockstep with time. Therein lies the trouble.
