Fair to say the last 4 years have been one non stop shit show with 2020 taking the cake for “Supreme Shit Show”. When moments come by like late September ocean swim days, as hard as it may be to disconnect, we need to grab them- for sanity and for resilience, particularly for my activist and front line defending comrades. Crawling out of the mess of 2020 will not happen overnight and the climate crisis worsens every year. Point being- pace yourself- this fight won’t be a short one. It’s been a crazy few days. We found out Saturday afternoon my Dad had a brain tumor. 2 days later he had surgery to remove the mass. The surgery was a success and the doctors feel very confident that they were able to remove all of it! He was released today and is home safe and sound! For now we await the results from pathology. So many thanks to all of our family and friends from around the world. I met Donny when I was 13 through @johnnyo_65 and I still remember the first day I walked into his shop in awe looking at all the crazy looking surfboards he had in there (I wanted to ride all of them haha). That was when I really started getting interested in surfboard design. I remember the many windy afternoons spent in there just trying to learn as much as I can and sponge up all the knowledge that he has told me over the years. My ALS reality check: Ive lost 30 pounds of muscle (including fat) I have to blend all of my meals now as I choke on food if its not blended up. When I lay down at night to go to sleep I have to swallow saliva and phlegm (just like everyone). But for me, it doesnt go down my throat. It just stays in the throat. This picture illustrates how high I can lift my arms up in front of me. Thats as high as I can go. I cant put a belt on anymore. I have a very hard time putting on socks. If the socks are tight I have to help my wife Tricia help me. If I have a button-up shirt I need help as well. In December 2018 I started measuring my grip strength. Ive lost 91.5% in my left hand and 77.76% in my right hand. Ive had ALS for 3 1/2 years now so the grip strength in arm strength lost in total is much higher than these percentages. This is the face of a woman who is equal parts excited and nervous to launch our private membership on the 22nd. I’ve cried more in the last few weeks from nerves and have said “I’m quitting” to friends more than I’d like to admit! . . The beauty of the tears is that that’s when I know I’m on the right path. If I don’t have sleepless nights, waking up at 2am building, planning, strategizing, it’s not meant to be. After 14 years of being my own boss I’ve finally figured out to allow those feelings to mean something so much bigger than myself. Going to have to post throwbacks this season. ☀️ When I turned on my TV today and saw the sun shining down on the field at MetLife I had a familiar feeling come over my body and smile from my heart. I felt that excitement in my soul as if I was at the game. It’s a feeling that nothing else can compare to and barely any words can describe. I look forward to game day, it gives me excitement throughout the week, it gives me motivation and life. 🏈 It’s a little depressing but there’s nothing I can do at all, so here I am at home. Sad inside but hopeful that next season will be even better. For me the game isn’t just watching sports it’s supporting my athletes, meeting family, networking with agents and coaches- it’s literally the best day of the week. 6.16.16 • Originally, just the Caveman and Papa Fig went down to San Onofre to surf for Father’s Day. That was waaay back before the Caveman was legally bound to be a daddy to my only child, and long before Papa Fig would find his beloved and become a father to 3 mini-me children. The Hero and I began tagging along for the day because the Hero adored both the Caveman and Papa Fig. After just a few years, and after all the babies had fallen from heaven, the day turned into a big traditional family ta-do with too many families to count and ice chests and EZ-ups and steaks, as well as hot dogs and cans of beans cooked over open fire pits with overnight camping in motor homes and tents. And sunscreen—shit-tons of SPF-10000. Without a lie, it has been quite a journey for 2 guys that just wanted to get stoked and 1 broke-down girl with a kid who had claimed one as his daddy. Last year, it was only the Caveman and me at San O to snap a pic on Father’s Day; this year, we were back to the OG. I imagine, things are changing (or have changed ; ) again, or maybe we will be done with this tradition completely, and it will be time to start a new tradition. Til slutt lå det begravd langt inne i meg. Jeg ga vel opp på en måte. Det har heldigvis skjedd mye siden da. Og så kom corona, og et øyeblikk trodde jeg hele planen min kom til å gå til helvete. Det skulle vise seg å bli min gullbillett. Jeg bestemte meg for å vie 1.år på å gjenreise meg selv. Og fy søren for en utvikling jeg har hatt både fysisk, psykisk og ikke minst mentalt. For de 10 ukene med Feminin Fysikk er ikke bare treningen og mat. Det er selvutvikling og bevisstgjøring. Den endringen du ser i speilet hver uke er ingenting i forhold til det som skjer mentalt. Og det er så gøy. Når jeg nå vet hva jeg har klart siden mars, så er jeg utrolig spent på hva jeg kan klare de 6.neste mnd. Denne gangen er det min fysiske styrke jeg skal forbedre. I woke up a few nights on the John Muir Trail + started crying in my sleeping bag ... feeling mixed emotions of relief, excitement + a little bit of fear because of this book. I’ve worked so freaking hard with passion + purpose ... and it’s almost here! For me, writing a book during Covid was an absolute blessing ... while the world was encompassed in pandemics + all of the things that came with it, I chose to write without reservation. What did I have to lose? We are changing + shifting in this world at lightening speed. There’s never been a better time to speak TRUTH without hesitancy, and so I did, sharing things in my book that only my closest friends + family members know about. And then ... (LoL) ... floodgates opened in the middle of the night while sleeping under stars + in calm air on the JMT. “Oh my God, my secrets are no longer my secrets. And my story is no longer only my story.” Opening my phone, I began reading past journal notes while writing my current thoughts. That’s when I came across this: “The lens we use to view others doesn’t have to be through the lens of which they view us.” Yes-WOW. So true! Reading those words was everything. And so I’d like to use this experience to share a gentle, loving reminder with all of you: If someone chooses to view your story or life through a judgmental lens, this does not mean you need to be judgmental of them. How you choose to live your life ... or heal in your life ... or move on in your life should only be a reflection of your needs, wants + desires in life. Instead, someone judging you offers a unique opportunity to practice deeper compassion + empathy for the other person. Which ultimately, I promise, will come full circle and provide compassion + empathy to you, too. ❤️ Always stand in love. You can preorder my book in my handle. And tomorrow ... “What gets measured gets done.” 🙌🏼 I’m excited for my kids to get back into a regular routine this week as they start school full time again! Along with that, I’ve decided to revisit my own goals. (PASS: Physical/Academic/Social/Spiritual) I thought I’d share with you some of the steps I take to help me specify my goals and measure my progress, and I’d love to hear any tips you have as well! Sharing is caring after all. 😀 1. Clear your mind with a brain dump by getting your goals out of your head and onto paper. 2. Organize goals into groups your brain can handle and break down large goals into smaller tasks your mind can achieve one at a time. 3. Commit to and schedule each task. It helps to put pen to paper on this too. 4. Put systems into place to keep yourself accountable. (Ex: find workout buddy you can report to each week.) 5. Celebrate your wins- big or small. This will give you the energy you’ll need to stay committed to those larger goals. (Ex: I like to put little things on my Audible or Amazon wish lists and if I’ve stuck with my weekly goals I’ll treat myself to a new book or pen/stationary set!)
