The unique annular disc brakes on the 1961 Porsche RS-61L. Porsche designed an alternative disc brake system to minimize the weight penalty associated with switching to one of the “off the shelf” options available at the time. This new system was available as an upgrade to the standard drums and was just two-thirds of a pound heavier. These brake systems were found on Porsche race cars from the early to mid 1960s and were even offered as an option on some of the 356 road cars. This week’s fourth Battle of Britain aircraft is the Boulton Paul Defiant, also known as the ‘turret fighter’. It is often described as the worst RAF fighter aircraft. But was it really? Let’s find out… While the Hurricane and especially the Spitfire are famous for fighting in the Battle of Britain, the Defiant is somewhat forgotten. Yet, it is one of the most interesting aircraft ever to serve with the RAF. What made the Defiant so special, was the concept of a turret-armed interceptor fighter. By the mid-1930s bomber aircraft had developed into fast aircraft, which were difficult to intercept by existing fighter aircraft. It was believed that air combat would happen at such great speed that a fighter with the guns firing straight ahead would have insufficient time to shoot down a bomber. The solution was to use a fully rotating gun turret which could fire at the bomber. The idea was that the turret fighter would fly next to the enemy bomber and riddle it with gun fire, much like a naval engagement during the Battle of Trafalgar. Unlike Nelson’s ships, the four-gun electro-hydraulic turret could fire 2,400 rounds per minute. It seemed like a valid concept and Boulton-Paul replied to the Air Ministry’s Specification F.9/35 of a two-seater day-and-night ‘turret fighter’ by offering the Defiant design. A prototype first flew on 11 August 1937. Flight trials revealed the aircraft possessed positive flight characteristics and was a stable gun platform. Its Rolls Royce Merlin engine gave it a top speed of 302 mph (486 km/h), around 20 mph (32 km/h) slower than the Hurricane. When Hitler invaded France, only two fighter squadrons were fully equipped with the Defiant. On 13 May, Defiants of No. 264 Squadron engaged a formation of German Stuka bombers and claimed four of them. In turn, they were attacked by the escorting German Messerschmitt fighters which shot down five out of six Defiants. In the next sorties, the scenario repeated itself: the Defiant was more than capable of bringing down a German bomber, but was vulnerable against agile fighter aircraft.
