Because our school was dropped right in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, the University of Arizona has always had to get creative with the use and collection of water resources. 💦 Old Main, arguably one of UAs most iconic locales, has some of the most pristine landscaping on campus. This type of landscaping is often referred to as Xeriscaping, which means that the plants are drought tolerant and little water is needed to maintain the landscape. However, the landscape design around Old Main is not just drought resistant, its a Water Harvesting Basin! 🌊 The Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science collaborated with this unique landscape and was able to install water harvesting basins that collect the rainwater that would have just been sitting there to evaporate! ☔️ In terms of environmental health, water is one of Arizonas biggest issues. Here are some tips on how you can save water, both on and off campus! You can... Collect Rainwater! Welcome to Elanda Point 🌳 Located in Queensland, 2 hours north of Brisbane, this area was revegetated with more than 100,000 native trees between 2003 and 2007. With the aim of taking climate action and restoring biodiversity, a variety of native tree species were planted as a part of this project. These included Queensland Brush box (Lophostemon confertus), Broad-leaved Paperbark (Melaleuca quinquinervia) and Turpentine Tree (Syncarpia glomulifera). As this forest grows it is capturing carbon from the atmosphere and providing habitat for the local wildlife. Many birds now call the forest home including the Noisy Friarbird and Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo. Over its lifetime, this forest will capture more than 46,000 tonnes of CO2-e from the atmosphere. Dinodhar Hills are located near Nani Aral village, in Nakhatrana Taluka, Kutch District, Gujarat, in India. Dinodhar Hill is a tourist and pilgrimage spot. An extinct volcano rising to an elevation of 386 meters. Last Volcanic eruption dates back to The Mahabharat period. The hill is pilgrimage centre due to Dhoaramnath shrine. On the highest peak of Dhinodhar hill, there is a small, domed, somewhat cracked shrine of limestone and mud plastered with cement, built by Brahma-Kshatriya Shethh Sundarji Shivji in 1821 (Samvat 1877). The shrine faces the east and has no doors. Its measurements are 53⁄4 feet square and six high, with an entrance 41⁄2 feet high and 2 feet wide. This shrine is sacred to the holy Dhoramnath or Dharmanath, who, after destroying Mandvi, repented of the loss of life, and determined to mortify the flesh by standing on his head on some lonely hill. Travelling to the north he began to climb the highest hill he could see, but it became Nanao, weighed down, by his sin. He chose another hill, but for it too the burden of guilt was too great and it became Jhurio, broken down. He chose a third hill, and climbing it backwards it bore him, and he called it Dhinodhar, the patience bearer. At its highest peak, resting it on a conical stone, he stood on his head for twelve years, a Charan woman feeding him with milk. Such merit and power did this penance bring that the gods took alarm, and, sending a deputation to wait on him, asked that his penance should cease. Dhoramnath said, wherever he first looked, the country would become barren. The gods arranged that he should first look at the sea. This dried up under his gaze and left the desert hence Rann of Kutch came into being. Fearing that the death of so many fish would lose him his merit, Dhoramnath moved his eyes and looking at the hill it split into two. Это было на Тополовом хребте, под горой Косогорчик, в двух км от базы «Надежда». Всего два километра до НАДЕЖДЫ… ⠀ Когда Костантин Волошин узнал о трагедии, он сам после травмы был закован левой ногой в аппарат Илизарова. Но добрался до машины, добыл грузовик японских лопат и поехал к месту схода лавины. Люди тогда копали до середины мая, от восхода до заката. По одному нашли всех пятерых. ⠀ Часть снегохода нашего друга, который тогда чудом остался жив, до сих пор лежит у нас на базе в аудитории как наглядное пособие. Снегоход разорвало на три части. Это он на фото. ⠀ …С тех пор прошло почти 15 лет. Памятник покосился, плиты проломились. Это было тяжело видеть. Боль в сердце, камень на душе. Близкие люди навсегда остаются в нашей памяти. И эта память должна быть светлой, а не покосившейся. И Константин решил восстановить мемориал. Поделился идеей с друзьями, работа закипела. Помогали все, у кого большое сердце и сильные руки. ⠀ Георгий Худолеев насыпал 600 м3 отсева, Дмитрий Бровкин поднял пьедестал. Кто-то нанимал самосвалы, доставлял материалы. Кто-то связывал габионы и укладывал в них камни. Две недели подготовки, два дня командной работы. Результат – на фото. Мы уложили в основание памятника тысячи камней. И с сердца упал еще один, самый большой камень. ⠀ ВСЁ! Ребята! Там – сверху, над вами – теперь чисто и красиво. Светлое и большое небо Камчатки. ⠀ А вы, друзья, проезжая мимо, вспоминайте добрым словом ребят. И помните об опасности лавин. В 2006 году мало кто говорил о коварстве снега, и не было никаких курсов лавинной безопасности. Поэтому случилась трагедия. ⠀ С тех пор тема выживания в горах для нас – это не просто слова. That day made painfully clear our reality: the climate crisis is on our doorstep. As #HurricaneLaura overwhelms the Gulf Coast, its now painfully clear how supercharged these storms are by rising global temps. At the same time, we are fighting multiple interconnected crises - the pandemic, systemic racism & voter suppression among them. We need a unified & coherent vision for change. We cannot continue to stand by and watch these disasters unfold. We need to learn from Katrina, Sandy, and now Laura, and demand better. We need leaders that listen to science. We need policies that prepare us for disasters and protect the most vulnerable among us. My heart goes out to those on the frontlines today. ***Master Trail Plan update*** We completed our Cultural Resource Study in May and submitted it to Tonto for review and final approval. The timing of this submission wasnt great thanks to COVID-19 and the forest service being slammed with wildfires. Despite the delays, we are hopeful we will get final approval within the next 30-45 days, as Matthew Lane, Mesa District Range said, were in the home stretch now! 🤟 During this delay, HTA wanted to be resourceful and continue with other items we knew would be the next requirements, but could be addressed simultaneously as the trails were going through the approval process. We got to work on the new proposed trail heads/parking lots- Wild Horse and Coon Bluff. One of our Board members, Gary Hana, happens to be a surveyor, and very knowledgeable when it comes to civil engineering and working with MCDOT. With the assistance of Gary, making calls into our good friend and advocate Supervisor Chucri, we were able to meet with MCDOT on site and find out exactly what requirements we needed to have these two important parking areas developed and meet their approval. We found out that the previously proposed Wild Horse parking area (which was where it exists today at the Wild Horse Trail head) would need to be relocated 800 to the east on Highway in order to meet MCDOTs line of sight requirements. We not only moved the Wild Horse parking/trail head, but increased its size (See photos) We also enlarged Coon Bluff by a couple of acres making it almost 8 acres, and larger than both the McDowell or Usery Park parking areas you may be familiar with. With the required changes to Wild Horse and expansion of Coon Bluff, we had to complete an addendum to our previously submitted Cultural Resource study because the changes had not been looked at for any archaeological issues or heritage findings.
