Our legendary neighbour harbouring nefarious alien species, as per our sci-fi movies. Last night, the sky was putting on a show, but the atmospheric turbulence was a pain. I managed to get some surface details with my 5” scope and 2x barlow. Well, it’s the year’s first capture of Mars and i’ll call it a decent start. By the way, polar ice cap is also visible in the image. A warm welcome to you, red. I’ll observe you very closely during the opposition. The International Space Station (ISS) passes in front of Mars, as viewed from San Diego, CA on September 14, 2020. The first image represents a single frame of 0.35ms exposure from a longer video sequence captured at 41 fps. The second image is a composite of five consecutive frames. The image was taken with a C9.25 Edge HD telescope and ASI183 monochrome camera, at exactly 05:15:47 PDT, and required setting up at a precise location, located within a 90m ground track. Higher quality images can be seen through my Flickr page linked in my profile, and a longer video sequence is available on YouTube. https://youtu.be/oHcMvF-nP2s - @thomasdglenn on Instagram

Mars - The Red Planet 👽 09/09/20. The surface of another world. So much I want to say about this image, but I just don’t know where to begin. I can’t stop looking at it!!! The white area towards the bottom right is the Southern Polar Region. I could even see it through an eyepiece the other night - the freakin ice cap of another planet 🤯 The darker area is the planet’s rocky landscape, while the red part is dust reflecting sunlight towards us. I did not expect to capture this kind of detail... planetary imaging is really not my area of expertise. I say this a lot, but this really is the image I’m most proud of to date. Yes there is progress to be made, there always is - but I actually saw the South Pole of Mars from my back garden the other night. This hobby is ludicrous. Let me know what you think, this one totally blew my mind. Skywatcher 200PDS; ZWO ASI 224mc; 3x Celestron Barlow; HEQ5. Stacked in AS!, processed in Registax and Adobe CC. - @astro_jord on Instagram

Facts about Mercury Mercury does not have any moons or rings.Mercury is the smallest planet.Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.Your weight on Mercury would be 38% of your weight on Earth.A day on the surface of Mercury lasts 176 Earth days.A year on Mercury takes 88 Earth days. It’s not known who discovered Mercury. A year on Mercury is just 88 days long. One solar day (the time from noon tonoon on the planet’s surface) on Mercury lasts the equivalent of 176 Earth dayswhile the sidereal day (the time for 1 rotation in relation to a fixed point) lasts59 Earth days. Mercury is nearly tidally locked to the Sun and over time this has slowed the rotation of the planet to almost match its orbit around the Sun. Mercury also has the highest orbital eccentricity of all the planets with its distance from the Sun ranging from 46 to 70 million km. #space #stars #planets #astronomy #ourinfinitespace - @our_infinite_space on Instagram
