#Phaethon driving his #chariot with 4 winged horses, carrying the #sun In #greekmythology, Phaethon was the son of the #Oceanid Clymene and the solar deity #Helios . Phaethon, challenged by his playmates, sought assurance from his mother that his father was the sun god Helios. She gave him the requested assurance and told him to turn to his father for confirmation. He asked his father for some proof that would demonstrate his relationship with the sun. When the god promised to grant him whatever he wanted, he insisted on being allowed to drive the sun chariot for a day. Placed in charge of the chariot, he was unable to control the #horses . The #Earth was in danger of being burnt up and, to prevent this disaster, #Zeus was forced to strike down the chariot with a #thunderbolt and kill Phaethon in the process. THE CHIARINI CIRCUS Anonymous, 1886. Available, link in bio. This large spectacular print is an advertisement for the travelling Chiarini circus. The group performed at Akihabara for the whole of September in 1886. This print was published 18 September of the same year, a quick production to promote the spectacular shows. In the arena we see acrobats balancing on running horses and animals such as tigers, elephants and monkeys doing tricks. These shows with their exotic animal acts were the new sensation and well-attended by the Tokyoites. Their popularity also attracted the interest of print publishers, resulting in a substantial body of prints documenting the Chiarini circus and their shows. The groups popularity was undoubtedly partly explained by the trends of the time. The Meiji era (1868-1912) marked the opening of Japan to the West, and the visit of Chiarini’s circus was thus considered not only as spectacular entertainment, but also as an event of political and cultural importance. The Japanese elite flocked to these performances, and in november the circus performed for emperor Mitsuhito and his court. It was the first time the Meiji emperor had seen a circus performance: it seems he enjoyed the experience as the emperor presented Chiarini with a reward of roughly 5.000 dollars worth in gold. The large red cartouche on this print reads ‘The world’s no. 1 Chiarini great circus!’. Its director and founder was Giuseppe Chiarini (1823-1897). Coming from an Italian family of traveling entertainers, Chiarini was also a true businessman, travelling the world with his circus. In many countries his circus was the first to be seen by the populace. His ‘Royal Italian Circus’, when convention dictated, would also be called the ‘Royal Spanish Circus’ and consisted of acrobats and performaners from a wide array of nationalities. The upper inset of this particular print is an interesting addition to the body of ‘Chiarini prints’, featuring the names of 57 (!) members and their country of origin. #hoteijapaneseprints #hotei #japaneseprints #leiden #artgallery #gallery #japan #Japaneseart #art #ukiyoe #mokuhanga #chiarinicircus #chiarini #circus - @hoteijapaneseprints on Instagram

Schoolbooks are shared spaces between a teacher and student; were the drawings on the pages of this ciphering book intended to be seen, or were they the private musings of a restless mind? Johannes Whisler’s fantastical doodles evoke Benjamin Franklin’s observation that “All Boys . . . begin to make Figures of Animals, Ships, Machines, &c. as soon as they can use a Pen.” The left-hand page displays mathematical problems using examples from history and commercial exchanges. Unlike the personal notations that follow in German, they are written in English, attesting to the importance of mercantile and legal interactions between Pennsylvania Germans and their English neighbors. Book of Arithmetic Problems of Johannes Whisler; Probably Johannes Whisler (1795–1874); Mifflin Township, Pennsylvania, United States; 1814–1815; Watercolor and ink on paper, with leather binding; 13 × 8 1/8 × 1 15/16 in.; Gift of Ralph Esmerian, 2005.8.44 Photo Credit: John Bigelow Taylor #AFAM - @afamuseum on Instagram

𝕎𝕙𝕪 𝕎𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕥𝕙𝕦𝕣 𝕎𝕖𝕕𝕟𝕖𝕤𝕕𝕒𝕪? The Winterthur collection houses so many unique and beautiful historical objects, which Digital Asset Manager Lynn McCarthy comes across every day in her role at the museum. She highlights this watercolor, Osage Warrior by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, 1806, Washington, DC, as one of the pieces she loves in the collection simply because it reminds her of a gem or a jewel, bright and small but poised and powerful. According to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Between 1803 and 1810 Saint-Mémin worked in the United States, producing hundreds of portraits of political leaders and élite society. In Washington, D.C., he met members of three delegations of Plains Indians who visited the capital between 1804 and 1807 at President Thomas Jefferson’s invitation, following the acquisition of their land through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Saint-Mémin made fifteen depictions of men from several tribes during these visits.” - @winterthurmuse on Instagram

American cyclist Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor (1878-1932) was the world’s first black sports hero. He became a world champion in 1899, American sprint champion in 1900, and set numerous track cycling records. Nicknamed “Major” in his youth in Indianapolis, he was the second African-American world champion in any sport. ♀Feminist Fun Fact: bicycles were made for men only... until women decided that they werent. ...the bicycle in the beginning was merely a new toy, another machine added to the long list of devices they knew in their work and play. To women, it was a steed on which they rode into a new world. article by @bustle 👆 🚲: @oopsmark #xotheglow #createspaceforyes #feministaf #empoweredwomen #sisterhood #feministhistory #herstory #feministfacts #badasswomen - @xotheglow on Instagram

Many of the features we see in our community today were inspired by bicycles, such as cars and paved roads. The bicycle also inspired the women’s independence movement, empowering women and spurring social change. When the bicycle was first put out into the market, it appealed to men—corsets and voluminous skirts prevented women from riding these high wheelers. In the 1890s Pope Manufacturing Co. started adapting their bikes, creating the “safety bicycle.” By lowering the frame, women could now ride a bicycle. Pope doubled buyer potential by making these changes. With dress reform—shorter skirts and bloomers—women could now go where they wanted and were no longer restricted to the home. This new freedom, where they could exercise and be outdoors, allowed them to feel stronger, and it began to influence their thoughts on their place in the world.
