One of my favorite things to point out while giving tours at the Archives was that we always strived to collect and include Everything Lesbian.. without prejudice towards differences in beliefs, and then I would show the boxes with Off Our Backs and On Our Backs living peacefully next to each other in the periodical room. off our backs (often referred to as oob) was an American radical feminist periodical (published from 1970 to 2008), by a collective of women who practiced consensus decision-making. From the first issue in February 1970: ..oob is a paper for all women who are fighting for the liberation of their lives and we hope it will grow and expand to meet the needs of women from all backgrounds and classes. The editors ask readers to use this paper to relate what you are doing and what you are thinking, for we are convinced that a woman speaking from the agony of her own struggle has a voice that can touch the experience of all women. The title of the magazine On Our Backs, the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the US, was a satirical reference to off our backs, which was sometimes thought of as prudish and not sex positive enough. off our backs regarded the new magazine as pseudo-feminist and threatened legal action over the logo OOB. On Our Backs was published from 1984 till 2006. Both titles had a loyal following and many subscribers read both- some of the LHA coordinators for instance appear in both publications. Due to a different filing system at LHA the titles no longer live in boxes next to each other... ☺ but we still have all the issues. Once we can safely open our building and collections again you can stop by and immerse yourself in these and many other titles. Rozz Double Exposure 4x5 tintype. When the plate is sensitized, we normally have about 10mins to expose the subject before the plate dries up and becomes unusable. That makes double exposure on wet plate very challenging. One of my favorite pieces of vinyl in my collection, despite the sleeve being in a pretty dismal state; a lot of wear and tear, rips all over, glue that has come loose. The vinyl itself is still in a very good state though. I bought it decades ago, when a bar I used to frequent was offloading their vinyl collection as they were only playing CD’s at that time (now they don’t even have those anymore). This was way before vinyl was cool again, so I bought it for a buck, or something close to that. Which all means that this record has lived. Generations of people have danced to this, drank to this, smoked to this, chilled to this, lived and loved to this. Come to think of it, I don’t think I could ever trade it for a more pristine copy. Now, all this wouldn’t matter if the music wasn’t good to begin with, but it is fantastic; one of the best live albums of all time, if you’d ask me. But aside from that, this physical copy of it has a soul of its own, and that’s something that a digital file can never replicate. So hooray for (second hand) vinyl, great music, and nostalgic fools. As I learn about the passing of Simeon Coxe of the Silver Apples, whose experimental self-titled LP is one of my cherished favorites, I am reminded of their brief intersectionality in hip hop via this candid excerpt (which sums up a lot of their forward-thinking appeal to me): “Jay Dee saunters into the control area, tape in hand. I always bring the tapes, he offers. They always count on me to bring the loops. I pick out loops, or old groups that I dig on. I have some crazy stuff! Tonight hes digging Oscillations, the first and only 7 single released by late 60s avante garde rockers Silver Apples. They have been active since 1970, but they landed on the album release in 1978, the end of the Zamrock scene. The only album I Can See It Coming is a very obscure piece. (Is there 45s release?) Alongside the Salty Dog and Ngozi Family, their music, which is one of the hardest elements in the Zamrock scene, has a consistent style from the beginning. When I picked up this record, I was surprised to find out that the font of the letters on the back of the jacket was handwritten font. If they wrote this, Oscillations are more dexterous Africans than Japanese. Certamente Giant Steps, lançado em 1960, foi a bofetada despertadora no mundo do jazz e da música em geral. Mas me encanta sempre reouvir esse Blue Train, de 1957, tido por muitos como o primeiro álbum solo de John Coltrane. Gravado com um timaço que tem Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew e a “cozinha” monumental de Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones, o disco fluí deliciosamente. O solo de trompete de Lee Morgan em Moment’s Notice mostra que ele poderia ter sido tão grande e influente quanto Miles. Mas Morgan, que tinha apenas 20 anos quando gravou com Trane, tretou demais em várias ocasiões da sua curta vida e acabou morto aos 33 anos pela própria mulher com um tiro no coração numa discussão entre eles no intervalo de uma gig em um clube de Nova York.
