☕ Isnt it funny how a cup of coffee can change everything? In 1910, Rose Biggi (the eldest of 7 daughters) and her family emigrated from Italy to the United States. Nineteen years later they drove from Beaverton to Portland to sell vegetables (including horseradish roots) at a local farmer’s market to make money during the Great Depression. One day, Rose bought a cup of coffee at the market and met Eve Grubmeyers – wife of Fred Grubmeyers. The two became close friends. In 1931, Fred and Eve opened Oregon’s first supermarket, Fred Meyer, and began grinding Rose’s horseradish for their deli department. Today, Fred Meyer has merged with Kroger, and is one of the largest grocery store chains in America. Like many who were getting into photography in the first half of the 20th century, Withers first camera was a @kodak Brownie. His sister had bought it for her boyfriend, who would lend it to Ernest. The first glance of what was to come for Withers career was when Marva Trotter, the supermodel and on-and-off wife of heavyweight champion Joe Lewis, visited Withers school at one point. Brownie in hand, Withers knew he had to make a picture. Standing in the back of the auditorium with the Brownies wide angle lens, however, did not produce the frame Withers wanted. Eye to the viewfinder, he crept forward until he was almost at the stage before he snapped the shutter. Breaking his focus from the composition, he realized that most of the auditorium was snickering at him who does this kid think he is? Getting so close to a supermodel to take a picture? Withers had the last laugh, however, as in the coming weeks his photo of Ms. Trotter was in high demand around the school. (Unfortunately these images have been lost to time) Withers displayed the makings of a great photographer. He knew how to compose a shot. Many, especially in this era before everyone carried a camera in their pocket, would have snapped a shot from the back of the auditorium just to say they had a picture of this famous woman. He could focus intently on his craft and ignore hustle and bustle around him. He began photographing his neighbor of Lenox, Massachusetts as a teenager, after having won an eight-dollar camera. He moved to Harlem in 1906. Initially he came to Harlem pursue a musical career since he was a skilled pianist and professional violinist. He even created and performed with the Harlem Orchestra. But in 1915, he moved to Newark, New Jersey and was employed as a darkroom assistant and photographer. He returned to New York in 1916 and moved to Harlem at the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. He set up a photo studio called “Guarantee Photo Studio in Harlem” and the rest was history. He produced hundreds of photographs of wedding, funerals, events of the Harlem middle class. Early 20th century black activist Marcus Garvey, black entertainer/ dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and renowned black poet Countee Cullen were among his more prominent subjects. 🎧More info episode 8 🔗in Bio - @thatwasntinmytextbook on Instagram
