Jim Jacobs is my longest living friend, I gotta say. We go back a long ways & through many an adventure. It all started when I arrived at Jims house in the Massachusetts Berkshires tucked away on a 100-acre mountainside of white birches outside of Great Barrington, & here is where our friendship takes off & has never ceased. Weve been through thick & thin together. Too much to recount in the short space here. Jim has been continually supportive of my work & always looked after my welfare. He invited me to house-sit many a time wch provided the solitude I needed for reading & writing & for my photography. In 1971, Jim & I became deeply involved in the teachings of Don Juan/Carlos Castenada. We were a sight for sore eyes all in white, if you can imagine that! Ha-ha. How we arrived in London is beyond me now; but we did some crazy shit like purchasing a restored 1939 white Bentley convertible wch made us more mobile when we visited with Alexis & Luisa de la Falaise at their pony farm in South Wales, where we slept under 4 layers of patch quilts to stave off the bitter cold. I became their barnyard photographer. Then it was off to Paris in an all-day rain with only one windshield wiper working when we arrived at Café Flore & where I photographed Jim with our Bentley, winter 1972. Many happy roads & journeys, then as now for us. Jim has since evolved into one of the leading independent curators of modern art. Weve come a long way. The Jaguar E-Type is sixty-years old next year, which is in itself quite unbelievable when you think of the inevitable impact that a car of such distinction and beauty would have today. I cannot begin to imagine the impact at the launch in Geneva and the subsequent “must have” celebrity list of wannabe suitors. By combining Malcolm Sayers’ cool aerodynamic design with Sir William Lyon’s intuitive styling it dominated the show. Enzo Ferrari described it as “the most beautiful car in the world”. Well that is subjective, but I’m not going to disagree. It is certainly the most iconic and the most famous car in the world. Whilst I’ve never owned or even driven one, then I think I owe it to myself to get the chance before our sixtieth birthday! At sixty the car will still have surviving original owners, a wealth of memories, and they appear to be attracting the highest values ever. I’m no expert but E-Types don’t particularly achieve premiums as a result of low volume production or product placement or exclusiveness. It transcends those kinds of elitist and frankly gross markers, notwithstanding certain versions attract premiums. I think it just sells for lots of money because it’s beautiful. Like drop dead gorgeous beautiful. My sister said my Aston Martin DB7 is like that to her. She thinks that (my DB7) is the most beautiful car she has ever seen. But she isn’t Enzo Ferrari, and whilst I don’t think she is far wrong, then as beautiful it is, then it’s launch wasn’t in 1961 when it really must have felt like the E-Type had arrived from space! I can only imagine seeing one for the first time. Here is Sir William Lyons with his creation in Geneva in 1961. What was he thinking! The sense of pride must have been overwhelming. El Salón del Automóvil de Frankfurt de 1955 fue el escenario elegido para la presentación de dos modelos icónicos dentro de la historia de BMW: el BMW 503 y el BMW 507. Durante el evento, todo el mundo deseaba acercarse para poder admirar de cerca a estas dos bellezas sobre ruedas. El BMW 503, que contaba con la presencia de un GT, y el atlético 507 mostraban que al marca era capaz de crear líneas realmente seductoras. El chasis, los ejes y el tren motor eran muy parecidos a los que lucía el BMW 502 3.2 Super. Tanto el 503 como el 507 llevaban un bloque V8 de 3,2 litros; algo impresionante para la época. En el 503, esta mecánica generaba 140 CV, una cifra que subía hasta los 150 CV en el 507. Gracias a esto, podía alcanzar una velocidad punta de entre 190 km/h y 220 km/h; unas cifras de escándalo para los años 50. El 503 era un Gran Turismo en el concepto clásico: confortable, con un apetito insaciable de largas distancias, y disponible con carrocería coupé o descapotable. Para jugar con el reparto de pesos, la caja de cambios se colocó bajo la fila de asientos delanteros. Era posible hacerse con una versión descapotable, con techo eléctrico. Por su parte, el 507 era otra cosa. Bajo y musculoso, para muchos sigue siendo uno de los coches más bellos de la historia. Sus líneas y su sonido lo convertían en un modelo realmente hipnótico. Ambos modelos fueron diseñados por un creador alemán afincado en Nueva York: Albrecht Graf von Goertz. Albrecht Graf von Goertz fue un aristócrata nacido en 1914. Después de su paso por la secundaria y de haberse formado para el sector bancario, se mudó a EEUU en 1936. Aquí fue donde descubrió su pasión por los automóviles. Tras la guerra, trabajo para Raymond Loewy -para muchos, el diseñador industrial más conocido de su época-, hasta lograr hacerse su propio nombre en 1953.
