Follow the link below to one of our digitized Education Programs, “Living off the Land” which was developed by Bonnie MacLeod in partnership with the Adirondack History Museum and Essex Community Heritage Organization. The document provides the history and relationships of the people to the land and labor of the Adirondacks - for students, there are lessons, activities, and additional resources as well. The historic overview explores timber industries, tanneries, mining, and agriculture. “Human labor drew tribute from the forests in a dozen or more sustaining industries. From first to lay the forests have furnished logs, timbers, lumber, fuel, fencing, tanners, bark, charcoal, ashes for potash, ashes for fertilizers, furs, animals and birds for meat, sugar, vinegar, and, in later years, railroad ties, telephone poles, pulp for paper, and fuel for boats and trains to produce power.” U. Today is the day that our grandfather Johan Heinrich Gerhard Louis Grönefeld would have celebrated his 124th Birthday. He was born on July 14, 1896. He is the man that started the Grönefeld watchmakers legacy. Johan commenced his career as a watchmaker in 1912. Taught by his uncle, Johan established his workshop and boutique in the shadows of Saint Plechelmus, a basilica and tower dating from 1240. He also looked after the church’s remontoire and striking mechanisms. Johan was both an exceptional watchmaker and consummate businessman. His prowess with watchmaking tools, combined with creativity and inventiveness, led to his reputation growing in Oldenzaal and beyond. Johan passed away on November 23, 1974. #MakerMonday: Yaahl Sgwansung #BillReid (1920-1998), of the Haida Nation, drew from the cultural material of his ancestors to produce a design language that went beyond tradition. Essentially a self-taught carver, Reid had limited contact with Haida art during his childhood, except through the traditional jewellery his maternal aunts wore. In the early 1950s, he established a jewellery workshop in his basement and began selling pieces to friends and specialty craft shops across the country. Reid’s first modernist-inspired pieces were mainly geometric brooches in silver and silver wire, but his technique would change dramatically upon viewing a Haida totem pole from his maternal grandmother’s village of T’aanuu Llnagaay (Tanu) on display @romtoronto. After this encounter, he began to rework Northwest Coast motifs into three-dimensional objects with semi-precious stones—a first in Haida jewellery making. Reid’s continuous study of Haida carving, particularly the work of his great-great-uncle, renowned Haida artist #CharlesEdenshaw, evolved his work further, and his refined skills allowed him to marry European jewellery techniques and stone settings with traditional Haida design. This is most of our team saying goodbye to our Warehouse. We now have learned that the fire has damaged the structural integrity of the building so much that it has to be removed completely. We still dont know how much our landlords building insurance will cover and to what extent other insurance companies will cover other damges. The whole thing is turning out to be a very slow process in times of corona and short-term work. However, we know that we are only saying goodbye to the building here and not to the idea of IPSE, which is carried by our team. We want to do everything we can to reopen with a changed concept since most of our open air area remains intact and ask you one last time for donations for our Startnext campaign (link in bio), where you can also acquire exciting souvenirs. Togetherness (2016) is based on an archival photograph of a vibrant nightclub in Overtown, which was once a vital, prosperous business district before it was devastated by the construction of the I-395 expressway, along with later calamities such as a major uprising in 1980 sparked by the death of Arthur McDuffie at the hands of police officers. The image serves as a testament to the patterns of injustice that have afflicted many Black urban subjects throughout the country, as well as a glimpse into a world that could have been or that could yet be once again. Hot town, it’s summer in the city, and New Yorkers are desperate for any relief for their increasingly dirty and gritty necks. This gent aired out his pecs on Ninth Avenue while waiting for his laundry as the mercury crept above 90 degrees on July 9, 1974. His neighbor went the windowsill route, presumably searching for any whisper of a breeze that might bring relief on the hotter-than-a-match-head day. As for our photographer William E. Sauro, there was no rest for the shutterbug: After capturing these 2 New Yorkers, he made his way up through Manhattan and over to Queens, past hydrants and bridges and eventually to the Astoria Park Pool. So theres this pic that I come across every so often. Ive seen it on docos, movies and on socials. I grew up staring at this photo. The man on the left, directing the people is my grandfather Risati Eteuati. The 2 girls near him are his daughters, my aunts. Ive heard many stories of him, mostly of how much of a great leader and how handsome he was. They were leaving theyre home Tokelau to go to NZ on a scheme NZ had initiated to fight the over population Tokelau was facing in the 70s. They left everything knew, created businesses, communities with broken or no English at all. They felt the fear trusted God and moved anyway. It dawned on me a couple weeks ago. Myself and so many other NZ Pacific people now living in Australia are 2nd generation Pacific people. Our babies are now 1st generation Australians! Our people are always moving, adapting, surviving, feeling the fear, trusting God and moving anyway. Can I encourage someone? Someone feeling terribly afraid of what is ahead but they do want to start something- a business, a book, whatever. Trust in God. Even if you dont believe in Him, if youre tried everything else, may as well try Jesus 🤷🏽♀️. Because like the people in this pic they felt the fear, but they trusted God and moved anyway. Our history with winemaking has been in our family for multiple generations- and continents. You can trace it all the way back to the nineteenth century. We can thank the third generation, John Braid, for our love of wine today. Here he is, on the cover of the New Zealand Wine Review back in 1967. John dedicated long afternoons to learning the wine trade from his step father, before eventually inheriting the business in the 1960’s. After he fell in love and built a family of his own, the Braids chose to immigrate from New Zealand to Santa Barbara in 1973. Homenagem tardia da E o Rio Era Assim ao grande empresário Basílio Moreira Gomes, último da geração dos fundadores do Angu do Gomes ainda vivo, mas que morreu cinco dias atrás vítima de uma pneumonia. . . Conta-se a lenda de que em 1955 um imigrante português, o Manuel Gomes, criou uma receita de um angu original feito de uma massa cremosa feita à base de farinha de milho e miúdos de boi, encheu em panelões e saiu numa barraquinha distribuindo o produto em latões nas ruas. Gomes teria se inspirado numa Baiana que vendia angu em latões na Praça XV.. . Não se sabe se tal história é fato ou Fake, mas sabe-se que se multiplicaram as carrocinhas de angu no Rio e o produto virou um sucesso. Sérgio Mendes e Tom Jobim foram alguns dos famosos apreciadores da iguaria. . . E é aí que entra o seu Basílio na história do Angu . Na década de 1960, Manuel Gomes já havia morrido. Seu filho João se juntou a Basílio para fundar um restaurante da marca no Largo do São Francisco da Prainha no bairro da Saúde. O Angu do Gomes ganhava um restaurante que funcionou até a década de 1990 quando foi fechado e as carrocinhas recolhidas. Porém o Angu deixou tantas saudades no Carioca, que o neto de Basílio, Rigo, em 2009 reabriu o restaurante em outro ponto do Largo da Prainha. Heart warming article by the @washingtonpost looking at never before published images of men in love between 1850 and 1950 collected and curated by @lovingbynealandhugh . “Nini and Treadwell saw themselves in the two men in the photograph and were filled with so many questions about who they were. Neither of them expected that this photograph would become the first of a 2,800-image collection and that they would publish their own book, “LOVING — A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s.” According to Nini and Treadwell about finding their first photo: “Our collection began twenty years ago when we came across an old photo that we thought was one of a kind. The subjects in this vintage photo were two young men, embracing and gazing at one another — clearly in love. We looked at that photo, and it seemed to look back at us. And in that singular moment, it reflected us back to ourselves. These two young men, in front of a house, were embracing and looking at one another in a way that only two people in love would do. Dating sometime around 1920, the young men were dressed unremarkably; the setting was suburban and out in the open. The open expression of the love that they shared also revealed a moment of determination. Taking such a photo, during a time when they would have been less understood than they would be today, was not without risk. We were intrigued that a photo like this could have survived into the twenty-first century. Who were they? And how did their snapshot end up at an antique shop in Dallas, Texas, bundled together with a stash of otherwise ordinary vintage photos?”. (1995). Por el interés que siempre tuve para entender el funcionamiento mecánico de las cosas, hice estudios formales de Ingeniería. En el tercer año de carrera me di cuenta que no sólo me interesaban los números y los cálculos, también sentía la necesidad de vincularme con mi lado creativo-humanista. Es decir, por un lado me encantaban las matemáticas pero, por otro, necesitaba equilibrar esa balanza. El Diseño Industrial se me presentó como la opción más apropiada para canalizar esas inquietudes. Mi primer año de estudios lo disfruté muchísimo porque era un año de conocimiento general que incluía materias de arte que resultaron siendo mis favoritas. Ese año fue revelador porque conocí la obra de Alejandro Otero. La obra de Otero fue un ejemplo magistral. Fue su obra la que me impresionó de tal manera que marcó mi camino. De inmediato comencé a experimentar y aplicar mis habilidades manuales a un nuevo lenguaje. Siendo aún estudiante de Diseño Industrial (en 1996) realicé mi primera exposición individual en la Galería Uno (Caracas). Tenía 24 años. ***** (1995). Because of the interest I always had in understanding the mechanical workings of things, I did formal engineering studies. In the third year of my degree, I realized that I was interested in numbers and calculations; I also felt the need to connect with my creative-humanist side. I mean, on the one hand, I love math, but on the other, I needed to balance that. Industrial Design was presented to me as the most appropriate option for those concerns. I enjoyed my first year of studies because it was a year of general knowledge that included art subjects that turned out to be my favorites. That year was revealing because I got to know the work of Alejandro Otero. Oteros work was a masterful example of my concerns. It was his work that impressed me in such a way that it marked my path. I immediately started experimenting and applying my manual skills to a new language. While still a student of Industrial Design (in 1996), I made my first individual exhibition at Galería Uno (Caracas). I’ve been wanting to say some things about what’s been going on in the world, but I haven’t really felt like it’s my time to speak. I keep circling back to these photos of Onio and Clem and I. They fill my head with a million memories of times spent with them. As a white young man moving into an all black neighborhood I saw some things firsthand that many people don’t get to see. I understand when people say the system isn’t broke that the system was never meant to work for black folks. I’ve seen that first hand. Redlining, liquor stores on every corner, the schools were a joke, and the crack epidemic. Sometimes skating home from school I get stopped by the cops, they often ask me if I was lost or if I needed a ride home to somewhere “you must not live here?” I’ve been replaying that in my head if the role was reversed, if I was a young black man rolling through an all-white neighborhood and the cop stopped me. I know it wouldn’t play out the same. It probably would’ve played out very similar to some of these disgusting videos I see on the news. Onio was a baby went I met him, he would literally play in the middle of the street, cars zooming by, trash everywhere , it was sometimes hard to witness. Their mom was an incredible personality, but she worked the streets, and did what she had to do. I never saw anything that resembled any sort of dad in their life and I’m not sure if that person even existed. Jake taught me how to care for those boys, talk to them like adults, and treat them with respect. I had more time to invest in them than he did. Honestly at that time, being a white boy in that neighborhood, I was extremely lonely, and they were extremely in need of some care. Some days were easy, singing bill withers -grandmas hands- loudly in my truck, skateboarding, laughing.... But some days were so hard, visits to their school, they were years behind, tantrums, and meltdowns. When they turned about 15, I kind of gave up, I set boundaries, and they were broken. I was exhausted and I threw my hands up. Their life got harder, and they learned to hustle in the street.
