Hey all, it’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these but I thought I’d give you a little updated #fridayintroduction I’m Justin, the less-beautiful half of Justin & Mary. If you don’t follow @marymarantz you shouldn’t continue reading. Go follow her now! A few things about me 1️⃣ So lately I’ve been working on some personal projects shooting #4x5film on my #gowlandflex twin lens. When we were in New Orleans last week I met another photographer named Valentine that was shooting some paper negatives in an 1800’s wet plate camera… and then he was developing them in a mini portable darkroom right there on the street! So he photographed me with my Gowlandflex, and I made a portrait of him. (more on that to come). 2️⃣ This past year I’ve also taken up Squash. It’s crazy! I played competitive racquetball in college but this is SO different! It’s been really fun and an amazing workout, but my record resembles that of the Cleveland Browns this year (as a Giants fan, I feel your pain!), but then again it’s only my first season and I’m playing against guys that have done this for years. 🏆3️⃣ I love our morning routine with @marymarantz and @attaboyatticus. Atti and I come downstairs and he does three consecutive jumps up on to the couch to say morning to M, then we go downstairs to make breakfast. 4️⃣ Speaking of breakfast, I’ve also started Gordan Ramsay’s Masterclass and I’m obsessed with his scrambled eggs. It sounds like a such a simple thing, but it has changed breakfast For-ev-ER. Happy Friday! - @justinmarantz on Instagram

[hommage] Roy Head (1941-2020). Its #throwbackthursday and we want to showcase the remarkable role that Sister Maurus Tierney played in supporting our local community through the Great Depression.⠀ Sister Maurus and the Sisters of Charity were offered food from local restaurants around Kings Cross to help feed those in need. Pictured here in 1935, the Sisters would set up tables in the laneways near the convent and serve food and tea to the homeless and the unemployed. ⠀ Tierney House, our short term residential facility is named after Sister Maurus and supports homeless patients that need medical assessment and treatment in a safe environment. - @stvincentscurran on Instagram

From the #italianenclaves: This photo was taken on E11th street and 1st avenue in 1954 in the Lower East side (renamed the East Village), which was a heavily Italian neighborhood that was built around Our Lady Help of Christians church and had tons of Italian societies and businesses dating back to the end of the 19th century and early 20th century; some of which still remain such as @venierospastry @johnsof12thstreet @russosnyc 🇮🇹🇮🇹 🥊 ONE OF the most popular fighters of any era, Rocky Graziano (second from left) was an adored champion until the day he died. Graziano, whose real name was Thomas Rocco Barbella, was a troubled youth growing up on the gritty Lower East Side of Manhattan. It can be said that boxing saved his life. A crude puncher, Graziano mauled his opponents with a tireless attack and potent right hand. Another great asset Rocky possessed was the ability to take a punch. His opponents ultimately withered while trying to stop a man who appeared to made of Rock. Graziano fought between the welterweight and middleweight divisions, but made his mark in 1945 when he knocked out welterweight contenders Billy Arnold and Al Bummy Davis. Then he scored consecutive 10th-round stoppages of welter champ Freddie Cochrane in non-title bouts and closed out the year by halting Harold Green in three rounds. Grazianos three-fight series with middleweight champ Tony Zale defines his career. The three contests lasted a combined 15 rounds and saw seven knockdowns. In the first fight, at Yankee Stadium in 1946, Zale recovered from a knockdown to stop Graziano in the sixth round. The rematch was in Chicago a year later because Graziano had his license suspended in New York for failing to report a bribe. Bleeding badly, Graziano knocked out Zale in six to win the title. - @italianenclaves on Instagram

On November 6, 1919, the world’s first scheduled radio broadcast services known as PCGG began in Rotterdam, Netherlands. By the 1920s, half of urban families owned a radio and more than six million stations had been built. In the 1940s, families were listening to their radios hourly. Entertainment like music and sporting events could now be heard by anyone with a radio and gave accessibility to those who could not afford to see live events. The radio greatly impacted African Americans by giving access to entertainment that they were barred from seeing in person due to segregation laws. In the late 1940s, 94 percent of African American homes had at least one radio set, where families would listen to popular broadcasters such as Hal Jackson, who is known as the “first African American announcer on network radio,” as well as the 1940s radio series called Destination Freedom, which aired on a local Chicago NBC station. Destination Freedom was created by Richard Durham who wanted to create a narrative of African American history and bring to light African American poets, journalist, and labor organizers. Not only did radio shows such as Jackson’s and Durham’s provide political and social arguments and narratives, the radio also played an essential role in the Civil Rights Movement, where disc jockeys would relay information through radios on where roadblocks were, where the next boycott was taking place, and in protecting African Americans from misleading propaganda. Presently in 2020, we see the importance and influence of social media, radio, and television in relaying information on how to support one another. It is important to MOAH that our museum continues to show and connect the evolution, influence, and relevance of historic innovations to the technologies and society of the past and present. Check out our collection of radios at http://www.moah.org/searchCollection.html Pictures below: Harlem residents in front of a shop listening to the radio, 1930s (Photo: Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture) and Hal Jackson. - @moahpaloalto on Instagram
