“On the Road” is launching for the second time a set of online workshops documenting how the world is trying to emerge from the pandemic and find new ways forward. Coping with the crisis, picking up life, adapting to or defining a new “normal”, and finding the balance between physical distancing and social cohesion are some the themes that will be explored. Participants will embark on a photographic journey into the changing face of their familiar realities, and develop diverse storylines, bearing their own personal mark. The aim is to go beyond the commonplace and capture the subtle manifestations of an unforeseen crisis and its effect on society, nature and human relations. The first workshop (4 week long every Sunday from Sept 6 - `Sept 27, 2020) is designed as an intensive attempt to depict the immediate aftermath of the lockdown, as the restrictive measures are slowly easing within the month of May. Participants will be expected to engage in a hands-on depiction of what unravels around them, and how their familiar landscapes are changing. The workshop consists of one group meeting per week. The second workshop (12 week long, every Saturday from Sept 12 - Nov 28 , 2020) is designed for those who wish to engage in a thorough depiction of the recovery from the pandemic over a prolonged period that allows for further exploration and for the full development of subject-specific visual stories. Over the span of three months, participants will be able to pursue subjects of their interest within their reach, crafting a nuanced, personal approach. The workshop consists of one group meeting per week. The first meeting on both workshops will include an online portfolio review as an introduction to each of the participants work. From the #italianenclaves: This photo was taken on E11th street and 1st avenue in 1954 in the Lower East side (renamed the East Village), which was a heavily Italian neighborhood that was built around Our Lady Help of Christians church and had tons of Italian societies and businesses dating back to the end of the 19th century and early 20th century; some of which still remain such as @venierospastry @johnsof12thstreet @russosnyc 🇮🇹🇮🇹 🥊 ONE OF the most popular fighters of any era, Rocky Graziano (second from left) was an adored champion until the day he died. Graziano, whose real name was Thomas Rocco Barbella, was a troubled youth growing up on the gritty Lower East Side of Manhattan. It can be said that boxing saved his life. A crude puncher, Graziano mauled his opponents with a tireless attack and potent right hand. Another great asset Rocky possessed was the ability to take a punch. His opponents ultimately withered while trying to stop a man who appeared to made of Rock. Graziano fought between the welterweight and middleweight divisions, but made his mark in 1945 when he knocked out welterweight contenders Billy Arnold and Al Bummy Davis. Then he scored consecutive 10th-round stoppages of welter champ Freddie Cochrane in non-title bouts and closed out the year by halting Harold Green in three rounds. Grazianos three-fight series with middleweight champ Tony Zale defines his career. The three contests lasted a combined 15 rounds and saw seven knockdowns. In the first fight, at Yankee Stadium in 1946, Zale recovered from a knockdown to stop Graziano in the sixth round. The rematch was in Chicago a year later because Graziano had his license suspended in New York for failing to report a bribe. THURSDAY INSPIRATION: HOMAI VYARAWALLA: THE FIRST WOMAN PHOTO JOURNALIST IN INDIA With time, the first woman journalist of India received national level acclamation, even more after moving to Delhi. She photographed many political leaders national and international, her favorite being Jawaharlal Nehru. She photographed many leaders in the period leading up to independence, including Mohandas Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Indira Gandhi, and the Nehru-Gandhi family while working as a press photographer. She also captured the various state visits of prominent figures such as Dalai Lama, just after he had escaped from Tibet and John F. Kennedy and the first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Her most famous pictures include the pictures of the first tricolor-hoisting after Independence, the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru releasing a pigeon, now a part of national archives. Vyarawalla learned photography from a friend and began taking pictures of Bombay life at the age of 13. Originally from Navsari in Gujarat, Homai earned a diploma from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art, Mumbai. A time when women were strictly confined to household chores until and unless one was a prominent figure in those times, Homai chose her passion and made a career out of it. An impressive step in that era, with today’s Indian woman to be much more independent and educated in the current year of 2019, a lot can be achieved if one believes in their passion and inner strength regardless of gender. What does reflecting on anti-blackness involve psychologically? A confrontation of the deidealised, ugly and hateful parts of ourselves. It brings a discomfort that we want to get rid of (picture 2 from my thesis). Is posting on social media a quick relief from that discomfort? It’s an action, but maybe also a movement away from truly being with our own oppressive and uncomfortable feelings and behaviours, and the horrific impact of the harm on black lives. I’m taking active and reflective time away from screens and leaving a link in my bio for full pdf downloads curated so generously by @alijahwebb of Baldwin, Malcolm X, Fanon books and more. The revolutionary offerings of love from the black writers in this folder help me understand knowing, beyond what is deemed ‘legitimate knowledge’ by the white walls of academia. John Lewis, who passed away earlier this year, was an avid comic book reader, and claimed that comic books like this one from our collection inspired him to participate in the Civil Rights movement. The book Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story recounts in comic book fashion the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956, a response to Montgomery, Alabamas racial segregation in the public transit system. The cover depicts Martin Luther King, Jr., who is featured inside along with Rosa Parks. When South African prog-rockers Hawk broke internationally in 1973, it came with a name change and the world got to know them as Jo’burg Hawk. Moreover, the band got traction in some unexpected markets with Philips in Colombia releasing their sophomore album Africa She Too Can Cry with the Spanish title El Gavilan De Johannesburg. But the non-album single “Orang Otang” travelled even further with unique artwork and spelling variations popping up from France to the Netherlands to Italy (pictured above). The band copped the song from Ramsay Mackay and the original recording of the track and companion pieces by Freedom’s Children with the Malombo Jazz Makers in 1971 is the subject of SHARP-FLAT’s next release.
