- AU BORD DE L O

This if the first photo of me drumming at 13/14 in the early 90’s. I was in a band before I even touched an instrument, me and my brother just decided that’s what we were gonna do, and we just picked up and got on with it. I remember this photo being taken by my friend @rob.franks who at 13 was a great drummer already and gave us some musical clout. Everything I’ve done in my life since this day has started feet first, on the job, in at the deep end, and I feel fortunate I started so young with this mentality. Life is a hustle and sometimes you just need to make up your own rules. - @stewartbaxter on Instagram

Young Mars story (link in bio) is really the story of anyone whos ever worked in a restaurant, and anyone whos ever tried to make it in America as an immigrant. Some things may have changed since, but so much, still, has not. His story is that classic immigrant story, but also one that’s personal to me and to my family. He is the Gong-Gong, the grandfather, I never got to meet. But in the process of writing about him, and talking to my mom, aunt, and uncle about him and about his restaurants, I feel like I do, at least a little bit. And I hope others might be able to relate—that maybe you’ll see parts of your own grandparents, great grandparents, mothers, and fathers in his story, too. - @deannating on Instagram

The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 killed more than 564 people, decimated 9,000 homes and buildings and destroyed roughly 2 billion trees. A system to name hurricanes was not in place 82 years ago, but in the decades since its destruction, the storm has been called everything from the “Long Island Express to simply “The Big One.” Click link in bio for more. - @masslive on Instagram

Photographer Li Zhensheng, (seen in first photo), captured rarely seen views of China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Using his Rolleiflex and a Soviet era Kiev 35mm camera, Li smuggled thousands of negatives to New York’s Contact Press Images agency that eventually became the book Red-Color News Soldier, published by Phaidon Press. I would have never been born if not for this odd occurrence during the Korean War. My dad was a Paratrooper training at Fort Benning over 70 years ago. His squad was ready to deploy to front line and all required to get Vitamin K shots to decrease bleeding on combat plane jump injuries. My dad became deathly ill from the K shot and was hospitalized for weeks. His full squad deploy jumped on front lines in Korea and all died. So Memorial Day has always had a special honor for his colleagues in our family and I arranged numerous trips to West Point Military Academy saluting the graduates with my whole family in attendance. - @drrobertgoldman on Instagram
