Old Ipswich Postcards - Grimwades. Founded in 1844 by Richard Grimwade, a tailor located in Westgate Street. And generations later, this building on the Cornhill continues as a landmark. Constructed in 1898, this Memphis theater was originally named the Jefferson — even though it was located on Madison. Two years later, the name was changed to the Lyric, and it remained a popular vaudeville house until 1924, when it was used for YMCA meetings, dramatic clubs, and town hall gatherings. In its later years, it served as a movie theater, but it was never as popular as the more opulent movie palaces on Main Street. In 1941, the building burned in one of this city’s most spectacular blazes. Salvage crews tried to remove two statues of Greek maidens that adorned the entrance, but their chains slipped, and the sculptures crashed to the ground. Still, portions of the old theater have survived. One woman bought 60,000 of the fire-scorched bricks for a home she was building on South Parkway. A home-owner in East Memphis bought thousands of other bricks and used them to build a handsome wall around his home at Highland and Watauga, still standing today.   Photo courtesy Memphis and Shelby County Room, Benjamin L. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19th, 1865 that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official on January 1st, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the enslaved population in Texas due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. Freedom finally came after a proclamation by General Granger solidified the emancipation of the quarter-million enslaved people in the state. These images are from a larger selection of early ambryotype and tintype photographs in @thekinseycollection. Taken during the post-Civil War period of Reconstruction, these elegant portraits portray newly freed African Americans dressed in their best for the photographer. In many ways these photos represent the hopes and dreams of a people, who for so long were denied the right to even have hopes and dreams. With freedom came the urgency to find family that had been sold away, to create businesses and community, participate in the political process, and to cast off the vestiges of slavery. When The Kinsey Collection acquired these historical images they came without descriptive documentation on the subjects in the photographs - thus the names of these incredible people have been lost to history. However, when viewed together, these portraits provide a collective snapshot of African Americans seeking to achieve the American Dream, envisioning a better life for themselves and their families shortly after the end of slavery in the United States. On this day especially, we honor our ancestors who did so much, with so little. Happy Juneteenth from @thekinseycollection. #thekinseycollection #kinseyuntold #juneteenth #juneteenth2020 #africanamericanhistory #africanamericanart #blackhistory #mythofabsence #americanhistory #americanart #history #fineart #art #education #museum #exhibition #becauseofthemwecan #blacklivesmatter - @thekinseycollection on Instagram

Buffalo Soldiers, Black Seminoles-Mascogos Growing up in Austin, I can’t remember when I learned about Buffalo Soldiers. It seems like they were always there. They were in the Juneteenth parades. They were at most cultural events, especially during Black History Month. The men we refer to as Buffalo Soldiers have a long and complicated history extending beyond one particular nation-state or region. These racially segregated infantry units were a mix of formerly enslaved Africans that were not solely limited to Africans who were emancipated before or by the U.S. Emancipation Proclamation. There were many self-emancipating Africans that became apart of these frontier scouts and soldiers. Notably, the Black Seminoles, a mix of formerly enslaved Africans who escaped to Spanish Florida and forged very complex relationships with Indigenous groups in the region. They were committed to their freedom. Once the U.S. acquired Florida and passed The Indian Removal Act, forced removal and departure happened to the U.S.s expanding frontiers like Texas. Both the U.S. and Mexico employed these African peoples services to; dispossess, contain Indigenous populations to certain areas, and protect either countries borders. In exchange, these skilled infantry persons were promised land, protection from enslavement, farming materials, and other things. However, in many cases, neither the U.S. or Mexican governments kept their ends of the bargains. It left these people and their families in precarious situations. The descendants of the Buffalo Soldiers, Black Seminoles and Mascogos continue to exist in Texas, the U.S. and Mexico. In Mexico, their descendants are primarily located in Coahuila in El Nacimiento and refer to themselves as Mascogos. Not far away in Bracketville, TX there’s a community with museums and cultural activities. Divided by nations, but united in the fight for freedom. My Grandmother was born in Yazoo County, Mississippi on August 25, 1927.  She was the oldest of 10 children.  She married twice and had one child, my mother, who proceeded her in death.  She was the daughter of sharecroppers, and the grand daughter of slaves on both her maternal and paternal sides.  She attended the Little Red School House until 8th grade, and then she worked in the fields picking cotton.  It was said that she could pick as much as any man- which is no small feat.  She married at 18 and had my mother at 20.  She was a maid for 40 years.  She loved the Lord all the days of her life.  She could cook better than most.  She could clean better than most.  She could laugh harder than most.  She could shoot, kill, and cook anything.  She was quick to laugh and quick to cuss.  She loved hard.  She was fiercely stubborn, and fiercely loyal.  She and I were close in some ways, and different in others.  She found me sometimes to be too “citified” and I don’t think she ever forgave me for not knowing how to properly shoot a double barrel shotgun.  I told her as a child (age 6)...that my temperament was too bad for that.  She laughed because she said I was always baby-fied.  Rest in Heaven Grandma.  I love you. - @tonyamichelle on Instagram

THE BEGINNING OF INSTITUT FOR (X) - 1st of October 2009 After carefully searching the city for free m2, Bureau Detours succeeded in finding a location with the proper size and potential for exploitation: Toldboden (The customs house), now the A-house, on the old area of Godsbanen. A positive dialogue with Jakob Sennels (former technical chief of Kulturhus Aarhus) among others, brightens the opportunity to take over the space permanently. With a solid rhetoric during negotiations, it finally succeeds in getting a verbal commitment from Aarhus Kommune, to take over the keys for the area. The old toldbod is now in the hands of Bureau Detours, with the message “Do it properly!” A few days later “Remix” is held, a party and celebration of the recent takeover. Many visitors gather this evening and the attendance from the municipality stands out. After the party, inquiries to become a part of the space starts ticking in. Suddenly, the big empty buildings doesn’t seem to be hard to activate. At this time, Bureau Detours only consists of a few people based in Århus, so the interest from the outside is especially welcome. As the platform grows, it clarifies its need for a name. Because of the constant shift of people and project and with a conscious lack of vision and rules, the name Institut For (X) is chosen. The X represents a variable, which allows the users of the platform to attach different meanings to it. The houses of X are given a letter, in the order they are taken over. Besides this, new neighborhoods arrives as Industrien, Boxpark I and II and Yurt-landsbyen (The Yurt-village) Sources: THIS IS X and different photographers incl. THROWBACK THURSDAY Meet Carl Christian Reindorf. He was a Gold coast pastor of the Basel Mission, a historian, teacher, farmer, trader and physician in the Gold Coast ( Now Ghana). Carl Christian Reindorf himself worked as a teacher of history at the catechists and teachers’ seminary at Akropong (Akuapem) from November 1860 to April 1862. In late 1863 Reindorf was appointed teacher at the newly founded middle school at Osu. In 1866 he took part in the local war between the Ada (a Ga-Adangme group) and the Awunas (Ewes from the Volta Region), acting as assistant surgeon. After the war he was appointed head teacher of the Osu Middle School. The course for students from the ages of fourteen to eighteen included subjects such as biblical exegesis, theology, history and geography, English, and, for the senior classes, Greek. Carl Christian Reindorf worked as a teacher at Osu until 1872. He established a boarding school at Mayera with a dozen Ga boys from Accra. He lived and worked in Mayera for a decade before returning to Christiansborg, Osu. Carl finished work on his notable book, A History of the Gold Coast and Asante in 1889. This literary piece was originally written in the Ga language. The English translation of the book was published in Basel in 1895. Carl Christian Reindorf ’s History of the Gold Coast and Asante has a special place in West African historiography. Drawing a colorful and lively picture of historical events, it was written from an African point of view; in it Reindorf gave Africans a voice and the ability to actively shape history, in marked contrast to the views of his European predecessors and contemporaries. Deep in the forests of Wallowa County, Oregon, was Maxville. Founded by the Missouri-based Bowman-Hicks Lumber Company in 1923, it was unlike most logging towns in the Pacific Northwest in that it allowed Black people to work and live among White people. ‪•‬ Alongside White men, Black men hewed timber and raised their families in the same area despite Oregon’s exclusionary law, which, until its repeal in 1926, prohibited Blacks from residing in the state. This law specified that “it shall not be lawful for any negro or mulatto to enter into, or reside” in Oregon, with exceptions made for those who were already in the territory. ‪•‬
By the mid-1920s, Maxville blossomed into a community of 400 citizens becoming the largest town in the county. The town contained a post office, medical dispensary, company store, hotel, and a blacksmith. While logging in the woodlands, the men intermixed, but Jim Crow laws were enforced once back in town. In leisure, baseball brought them all together as they played on both segregated and integrated teams, which even led them to a tournament win. ‪•‬
Toward the ‘30s, the Great Depression ravaged the lumber industry, contributing to the town’s decline, which led to Maxville’s eventually closing in 1933. Residents migrated to neighboring states, albeit some lingered. A blizzard years later destroyed the remaining structures and saw the last people leave. ‪•‬
However, what has been a ghost town since will now have its memory maintained in posterity thanks to the efforts pioneered by Gwen Trice, a descendant of one of the original Black loggers, and founder of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center in Joseph, Oregon. ‪•‬ Read the full story of those spirited loggers in the Filson Journal. On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. The women’s suffrage movement lasted nearly 100 years and involved thousands of women from different walks of life campaigning tirelessly for the right to vote. Suffragists held mass meetings, circulated petitions, and went door-to-door to persuade voters of their cause.

Have you guys seen the movie HARRIET??? ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. Sometimes films about history can feel so waited and heavy that you don’t know if you have the capacity to take them in. That isn’t this. Obviously heavy themes but told from a very inspired perspective. I felt so empowered watching this movie and I feel it portrayed Harriet as the true superhero she actually was!!!!! Kasi Lemons, director of one of my favorite films “Eves Bayou” also directed this and the angles, the score, the locations, the CASTING was all so incredible. It truly felt magical, @cynthiaerivo made me feel like I was actually watching Harriet Tubman herself. I appreciate this film as an American, that I can talk about things and give my child something empowering, magical and (some fiction)truthful. Thank you for this! (I know I’m late 🙄) God bless Harriet AND EVERYTHING SHE DID THAT WE DIDN’T HAVE TO DO. 🙏🏾 - @keke on Instagram

We miss you all! ✨✨✨✨✨✨ Wanted to share this hidden gem of a story with you 💃🏼 🖤💜🖤💜🖤💜🖤 #blm #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtpride William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a queen of drag. Imagine the queenery of this icon. He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the queen of drag. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for keeping a disorderly house (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ communitys right to gather. He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans. When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls. Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s! William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. Tell his story! - @travelingpbaus on Instagram

Ive had a deep love for doo-wop music since I was a kid listening to the oldies station in the backseat of my moms car. But little did I know at that time that Indianapolis played a big role in the development of doo-wop music, and this week on Cultural Manfiesto Ill be sharing a selection of Indianapolis doo-wop classics, along with interviews from musicians who got their start in the Naptown doo-wop scene. Indiana Avenue was the heart of Indianapolis doo-wop scene during the 1950s, and you could even make an argument that the Avenue is the spiritual brithplace of doo-wop. During the 1930s on Indiana Avenue, the Ink Spots were innovating a new form of vocal music that would lead to the development of doo-wop. Their contributions to doo-wop were recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, when the Ink Spots were inducted into the organization’s hall of fame. Tune in to Cultural Manifesto this Wednesday evening at 8, and Saturday night at 10 on 90.1 WFYI for an hour of Indianapolis doo-wop classics. - @djkylelong on Instagram

TBS programming is designed by two artists/designers/educators with over twenty years of combined experience as multi-hyphenate creators and educators. Part of the reason we created TBS is to be able to bring University-level instruction to people who may not otherwise have access to it. In this direction, we are introducing a new series of IG posts that share elements from the syllabi we are currently teaching from at Universities including Parsons The New School of Design, Pratt Institute, and The City of New York. The first course we’ll be sharing as an open-source syllabus is Art & Protest, surrounding the concept that All art is political, there is art in all protests, and in every corner of life. The Umbrella content for the entire course are organized into modules, by the topics covered in the June 2020 Angela Davis Interview with Amy Goodman. Below and Throughout the slides are resources from this 2nd module! Weekend Recap : My first trip post Covid. I couldn’t wait for this time although I was very skeptical. But it happened !! I booked a trip with my family and we went to the #cotedazur for a memorable weekend. We visited Nice, Monaco 🇲🇨 and Cannes, 3 of the most beautiful cities in the #frenchrivera and it was epic. I loved the weather, the activities, the monuments, the people and mostly the Food. It was liberating to be away from the stress of Paris, from the rain, the metro, and the constant feeling of this pandemic. And I never felt the urge to work that hard in my life because Monaco made me feel so broke. So if you want to support a girl go on my website and buy one of my @audetheodore T-shirt. I can’t wait to share more with you about this trip. #travelwithwendelle #wendelleinnice #wendelleinmonaco #wendelleincannes #businessowner #blacktraveler #haitianbusinesses #womenentrepreneurs #visitfrance #ilovenice #larvattobeach #colineduchateauanice #travellingpostcovid - @wendellesworld on Instagram

I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom...I was free, and they should be free also...* #OnThisDay in 1849, Harriet Tubman set out on her first attempt at escape with her two brothers, Ben and Henry. After some time, Tubman and her brothers disagreed on how to proceed, and they returned to their enslavers home. Some time after October 3, Harriet decided that she could no longer remain in bondage. Risking everything, she set out alone, and with the help of several operatives on the Underground Railroad, she finally crossed the border into Pennsylvania. Later in her life, Tubman would recall, When I found I had crossed the line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in heaven. Terno Dresses Posted @withregram Post by @julia.bennet.writes I’ve tried to find out about this photo but any legitimate results are crowded out by Pinterest where this is listed over and over again as “3 Sisters” with no supporting information. There seems to be some consensus that one or more of these women is Filipino. Looks 1900s ish to me. Edited to add: Huge thank you to everyone discussing this in the comments. (I love it when that happens!) I’ve pinned some of the most informative comments. So, they’re definitely Filipino but there seems to be a split between knowledgeable commenters about the date. Early 1900s or 1930s seem to be the main contenders 🙂 #oldphoto #portraitphotography #researchingtheromance #poc #historicalromance #terno #ternodress - @truevintageootd on Instagram

This is Mavis Gbewonyo (my Mum). This photo was taken in 1971 when she worked at St. Jamess Hospital in London. She moved to UK in 1969 and went straight into Nursing School and worked for a year before applying to do Midwifery and then the premature baby class. She didnt end up practicing Midwifery in the end as shed had my 2 older brothers by that time. Midwifery would have meant working day duty for three months and she wouldnt be able to look after them so she opted for General nursing where she could work night duty. (Side note I have many memories of my brothers and I trying and failing not to disturb Mum as she caught a few hours sleep after night duty while we played, Dads shushes werent very effective - soz Mama 😆🙈) She went on to work at a number of hospitals including Mayday (now Croydon University Hospital). Following a three year break when we moved to Ghana she returned to UK but unable to pick up where she left off switched to care nursing. She eventually retrained and became a sexual health nurse until she retired. My Mum shared one of the many racially charged experiences she went through in her career. This one was a direct attempt to sabotage the careers of her and the other black nurses in her cohort. After the nursing exams the Matron made appointments with all the white nurses to discuss potential posts. Mum thought theyd forgotten about her so booked an appointment to see the Matron herself. After the meeting she realised that was a mistake. The matron had no interest in supporting the black nurses. You learn youre not part of it. #blacknhsnurses #mavisgbewonyo #nursesuniform #nudeme #nudetights #usedtights #unshutsheffield #srn #midwifery #carenurse#enamgbewonyo - @enamgd on Instagram

Nashville first became known internationally as Music City not for its country music, but because of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.⁣ ⁣ The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years.⁣ ⁣ Without musical accompaniment, the a cappella troupe has sung as if the very survivability of Fisk University depended upon them. ⁣ ⁣ Follow the link in our bio to read the full story. ⁣ #BPM2020 - @communityfoundationmidtn on Instagram

What to Black Women is the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage? #OTD August 18th, 1920 the 19th Amendment was ratified. We are reminded of a blog post @wiltforcongress guest wrote for our blog back in February. Robin Wilt writes, “To unerase Black women from the women’s suffrage movement, we must ask ourselves, “What to a Black Woman is the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage?” Then, we must say the names of the women who fought not only for their own suffrage, but by dint of being Black women, inherently fought for universal suffrage.” Say their names. Share their stories. De-center whiteness. Expand the narrative. Ida B. Wells-Barnett Nannie Helen Burroughs Sarah Parker Remond Mary Church Terrell And many more. - @luis__iturrieta on Instagram

Today we are crowning just a few of the Queens who fought for womens rights as part of a broader struggle for equality, well before & beyond the passing of the 19th Amendment granting some American women the right to vote.⁣ ⁣ Ida B. Wells-Barnett expanded opportunities for women of color in the suffrage movement, through her community-based efforts with the Alpha Suffrage Club & other clubs for Black women on the local, state & national level.⁣ ⁣ Mabel Ping-Hua Lee led a contingent of Chinese & Chinese-American women in one of the biggest suffrage parades in U.S. history when she was just a teenager.⁣ ⁣ Susette La Flesche Tibbles gained the Native American name “Bright Eyes” for her work advocating for her community, & she is remembered as the first woman to speak out for the cause of Native Americans.⁣ ⁣ Comment below with the name of another suffragist to help us crown all of the #OneofaKindQueens who fought for generations to make womens suffrage a reality. 👑 - @sixbroadway on Instagram

It’s the centennial of the 19th amendment - however we know Black women weren’t allowed to vote until 1965! At this year’s #wellreadblackgirl virtual festival we will highlight Black political power - past & present, including Black suffragettes like Fannie Barrier Williams, Anna Julia Cooper, Lucy Diggs Slowe, Mary Church Terrell, and more. More festival announcements coming at the end of the month. Make sure to sign-up for our monthly newsletter for updates! ⁣✨ ⁣ “Civil rights activist Fannie Barrier Williams helped found the National League of Colored Women in 1893, which became the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) in 1896. She was later involved in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Although Williams faced racial prejudice, she participated in National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) conventions and was friends with Susan B. Harriet Tubman, notable conductor on the underground railroad, maintained strong ties to Boston throughout her life. Visiting the city numerous times, Tubman often met with abolitionists and women’s rights activists alike. The Liberator noted her participation in Boston suffrage events as early as 1860, when Tumban, called ‘Moses,’ attended a woman’s rights convention and “told the story of her adventures in a modest but quaint and amusing style, which won much applause.” The Woman’s Journal also recorded several occasions local suffragists welcomed Tubman. An April 1897 edition of the publication recounted a reception presided over by Ednah D. Cheney in which many people connected to both the abolitionist and suffrage movements attended. Tubman’s words reflecting on her life, The Journal observed, “left her hearers feeling braver and braver.” #SuffrageSaturday #HarrietTubman #VotesForWomen #Suffragent #NPS19th #19thAmendment #UndergroundRailroad #UGRR #UGRRMonth Sources: “Woman’s Rights Meetings,” The Liberator, July 06, 1860.
