Little House on the Prairie is an ever-popular series of children’s books based on the life of one Laura Ingalls Wilder. But who was Mrs. Wilder and what was her life like? No queda una res en pie. Unas sobre otras aún cocean en el suelo resbaladizo y ensangrentado. Los bebedores que presenciaron los sacrificios esperan el momento de recoger la sangre humeante. Todos entregan a los mozos los vasos que al efecto llevan». El procedimiento es metódico y es relatado por un periodista que, sin ocultar su asombro, narra lo que está presenciando: «En aquellos rojos manantiales los vasos van llenándose repetidas veces de sangre humeante. Los bebedores aproximan el vaso a sus labios y sin reparo, dominados sin duda por la fuerza de la sugestión, injieren el contenido. #MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. It’s #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) “Second Empire”-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principal’s office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regents’ room, a library, museum, assayer’s office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Gotta love a pony cart...led by a goat! This photo was taken c 1880s near what is now the area near Calhoun and Lockwood Blvd. It was published in 1893 as part of the twelve-part publication entitled “Art Work of Charleston” published by W.H. Parish (Chicago, IL). Each part features photographs of buildings and grand homes (both “lost” and still remaining), streets, historic sites, gardens, cemeteries, industrial sites, and Lowcountry scenes along with a narrative that runs throughout each volume. The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years.
