Then/Now Old Mill Site A mill has existed at this site as far back as 1757. For more than two centuries, it was a manufacturing staple for the area, producing wool, grist, cotton, and more, but by the 1990’s it was abandoned and mostly burned down. Luckily since then, the surviving building has been restored and serves as the headquarters for the local historical society. - @empireexplorer on Instagram

#TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua? We will let you decide — let us know what you think! - @iolanipalacehi on Instagram

LA MONEDA ▪︎ LA GRAN JOYA DE LA CAPITANÍA. Parte 4 de 5 ▪︎ La Construcción. . . [continúa] . . - @scl500 on Instagram

On this date, nearly a century ago, Thursday, September 21, 1922, the city established The Cal F. Johnson Park in honor of Cal F. Johnson. It was established for the Black residents of the city. Johnson invested money to make substantial improvements to the park including, lights, sidewalks, a Memorial Fountain and an Archway Monument. Johnson also spent his own money for the maintenance of the park. • • In 1956 the Cal Johnson Recreation Center was built in the park where it still stands today. - @beckculturalexchangecenter on Instagram

This residence at 20 Margaret Street in St. Thomas was owned by Alfred John Allworth, a former resident of St. Thomas, who died in this home on February 17, 1897. He was married to Jane Kettlewell, who passed away in 1860, and his second wife was Mary Ann Claris, who died in 1875. Allworth was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, England on June 12, 1820 and immigrated on the Cosma with his family in April 1830, arriving in New York, before joining family, who had previously immigrated and settled, in Southwold Township (the Silcox family). His family settled on a farm in Frome, Ontario. In circa 1840s, Allworth moved to St. Thomas to work as a clerk for Edward Ermatinger. When the London and Port Stanley Railway was established, Allworth was appointed as station agent and worked in this position for 15 years. He later became the first manager of the Canada Southern Loan Company, and remained in this position for 21 years, until his health forced him to resign five years before his death in 1897. On this day in 1853 the nations first union railroad station opened in Indianapolis. Several railroad lines shared the centralized station instead of operating out of separate depots, as was customary at the time. Five tracks for passenger trains passed through the station, and two tracks for freight trains ran along the buildings south side. Known as Union Depot, this station served the city for nearly 35 years until Indianapoliss new Union Station (the one that still stands) opened in 1888. - @indianahistory on Instagram

Today we wrap up our week-long look at the Levy familys role in saving Monticello by sharing a few images that document their stewardship and dedication, and the changing times as seen on Jefferson’s “little mountain” long after he was gone.   We have two photographers to thank for these images: William Roads, who took the earliest known photograph of Monticello, and the prolific Rufus W. Holsinger, whose 1,400 plates and negatives provide a remarkable and often moving record of life in Charlottesville and Central Virginia. Nashville first became known internationally as Music City not for its country music, but because of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.⁣ ⁣ The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years.⁣ ⁣ Without musical accompaniment, the a cappella troupe has sung as if the very survivability of Fisk University depended upon them. ⁣ ⁣ Follow the link in our bio to read the full story. ⁣ #BPM2020 - @communityfoundationmidtn on Instagram

There are so many wonderful photographs in the Museum’s archives of the horse-drawn vehicles used in Kennebunk in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were essential to move people, goods and information to places railroads and waterways didnt go. Horse-drawn delivery wagons remained in use well into the automobile age. It wasnt unusual to see milk, ice, or produce delivered by horse--especially in smaller towns like Kennebunk. Horses were well suited to the frequent stops and starts along a route and could negotiate poor roads better than early motorized vehicles. Before mechanical refrigeration, many Americans bought their perishable goods on a daily basis so enterprising merchants delivered groceries door-to-door in wagons. Historian Ken Joy gives this account of Charles Shepard who drove a delivery wagon from the railroad station to the stores downtown. “After he loaded his wagon at the station he would climb up to the sea, shake the reins and promptly fall asleep. Without guidance the horse would go down Summer Street, down Main Street into Garden Street and stop at the rear of the Curtis & Roberts grocery store. Charles would wake up and make his deliveries.” In 1902, rural farmers became more connected with the rest of the nation when Congress made rural postal routes--operated in only a few areas beginning in 1896--a permanent part of the postal service. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a boon to residents who were previously required to personally collect their mail in the nearest town. Elbridge Smith (1867-1933) used this light-weight mail wagon on his route in West Kennebunk. Many other rural carriers use d similar wagons some set up with a cash box, foot warmer and a small sorting desk inside.

It’s #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) “Second Empire”-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principal’s office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regents’ room, a library, museum, assayer’s office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Did you know that our beautiful Sacred Garden was created in 1920? At one time, the area was just an open space nestled between the bell wall, Great Stone Church and the Sala. Beginning in the fall of 1919 the Mission’s then Pastor, Father St. John O’Sullivan designed the area into the lovely space we see now that has become a popular spot for marriage proposals and family photos. In 2015, thanks to our generous donors, supporters and Mission Preservation Society Members, the Sacred Garden received much needed preservation treatment including cleaning and repairing the now 100-year-old fountain. Help us continue to preserve the Mission and keep our doors open so we can continue to be a place of education and inspiration for all! Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. They held fairs and exhibitions to showcase the skills of craftsmen, as well as lectures, dances, and marches down Congress Street where groups of tradespeople would carry handmade banners to promote their crafts - like this amazing Cabinet Maker’s trade banner from 1841. . . #laborday #laborhistory #mainemechanics #maine200 #mainehistory #portlandme #portlandmaine #historicpreservation #thisplacematters - @portlandlandmarks on Instagram
