In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, we’re highlighting female civil rights leaders like Jovita Idár, a Texan journalist and activist. Previously an educator, Idár worked for her father’s weekly newspaper La Crónica. In her articles, she denounced the social, educational, and economic conditions of Texas Mexicans and wrote in support of women’s suffrage. Idár and her brother formed a newspaper,Evolución, where they continuously advocated for women’s rights in politics. During the Mexican Revolution, she worked as a nurse and later joined the staff of El Progreso in Laredo. When El Progresso was shut down by the Texas Rangers, she returned to La Crónica which she ran after her father’s death in 1914. After her marriage and relocation to San Antonio, she became an active member of the Democratic Party, established a free kindergarten, and worked as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients in a county hospital. 📷: Helaine Victoria Press, Jovita Idar (1885-1946) [postcard], 1986. Oh WOW - we found this incredible photograph of a Sikh family in China with a Chinese amah from visualisingchina.net - this is the Sangha family group, with their amah, on 29 November 1936. Photograph by Cardon, Shanghai, 29 November 1939, Ranjit Singh Sangha Collection, Jn-s20. Kartar Singh lived in Shanghai from 1920 to 1960, where he worked for the Chinese Maritime Custom Service. Unusually, Kartar Singh did not leave China in the immediate aftermath of the Communist takeover. He continued working for the Customs until 1 November 1952, and then stayed on until 1960. Singh owned property in the city, but the new authorities made it difficult for him to collect rent or sell it. The new courts did not support his efforts to secure redress. He had lived in Shanghai for four decades since he was 21 years old, but finally he decided to leave in 1960, with one of the last groups of Indian residents who left the city. The collection is named for Kartar Singh’s son, Ranjit Singh Sangha, who was born in Shanghai’s French Concession in 1932. The photographs give a rare flavour of family and community life amongst Sikhs in Shanghai. The usual image of the masculine world of Sikh work in China is tempered here by photographs of Sikh women. There are also shots of a visitor from Kartar Singh’s home district, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala; of Indian nationalist leader, Subhas Chandra Bose; and of a family friend, Bishan Singh, who joined Bose’s Indian National Army and who fought the British Army in Burma during WW II. It was built in 1888 as a Santa Fe Depot station a few miles south of us on the other side of the road. 🚂 It was thrown onto a flatbed truck in 1972 and cruised up Coast Hwy 101 to where it stands today. It’s home to fresh roasted coffee, pastries baked right downstairs, and most importantly- its home to you all. Healing along side our ancestors. How’s everyone doing? Oooph I have to say I have been on a deep dive inwards, its been a dark, challenging and incredibly healing. Recently for me, it feels like one of the keys to our health, happiness, phobias, chronic pains and mental health is encoded deeply into our roots and that by reaching back into our ancestral lineage to heal, we create profound shifts for ourselves, our family and future generations yet to be born. Experts in neuroscience and post-traumatic stress also believe that to be the case, that unresolved trauma and distress experienced by our ancestors become coded into our DNA and can emerge as depression, chronic pain, anxiety or obsessive thoughts, desperate to be resolved in the next generations. Connecting back to our roots means tapping into our ancestral lineages, feeling into what needs to come through and reaching into the future to heal our descendants from the pain of our forefathers and mothers that has been experienced. During this time Ive been delving into my ancestral roots and have felt profound shifts and healing occur. Because of this, it feels deeply important to share this work. ‘Disappointed, almost sad’, that ‘a girl of strong personality and promise should want to muddle around with sticky clay’. These were the apparent feelings of an unidentified painter, when Margaret Butler decided to pursue sculpture over her watercolour painting. Born in Greymouth in 1883, Margaret’s muddling, gained the admiration of Europes foremost sculptors in the 1920s. She exhibited works at the Salon des Tuileries, Société des artistes français, and the Société nationale des beaux-arts. In London, her bust The blind girl, was shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1935. Despite this international success, Butlers recognition back home wasnt a fair reflection of her talent. This was perhaps best expressed by art historian Mark Stoker when he noted: ..invisibility dogged Margaret Butler within her lifetime and beyond it. Who is the REAL Hopper of the Crossing? ⠀⠀ Enticed by news of the Australian Gold Rush Stephen Hopper with his brother John emigrated from Kent, England in 1856 and set sail for Melbourne, Victoria to strike gold. ⠀⠀ After 3 years on the goldfields Stephen (28) met & married Elizabeth (Betsy) Rogers (16). They had one of the only houses for miles around on a small farm in Werribee (aka Hoppers Lane) and together had eleven children. ⠀⠀ The history books tell us Hoppers Crossing was named after Stephen Hopper … before any highways had been laid or estates had been built. ⠀⠀ It’s said that he’d be up at all hours, opening and closing the gates for passing carts – keeping Skeleton Creek connected. ⠀⠀ But history got it wrong! ⠀⠀ The Australian Railway historical society unearthed documents that showed it was indeed Betsy Hopper who was the Gatekeeper and Stephen was the Ganger who looked after a section of the track. ⠀⠀ The namesake of Hoppers Crossing is actually a pioneering mother of 11 children and one of the very few female railway employees of her time! 🙋🏻♀️ ⠀⠀ She played an integral role as the gatekeeper for the only route through Skeleton Creek, and established a family and community in the area, where descendants of her children are still known to reside. ⠀⠀ #locallegends ⠀⠀ *First pic shown is grandson of Stephen & Betsy also known as Stephen Hopper with his 7 children in 1924. ⠀⠀ Sources 📖: ⠀⠀ •Star Weekly •The Willis Tree|Julie Hopper - (Great great Grand daughter) •Wyndham History - @thevillage_hoppersjunction on Instagram

On September 27, 1804, Anna McNeill Whistler was born in Wilmington. McNeill was made famous in the renowned painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” Shortly after her birth, Anna McNeill moved with her family to New York. In 1831, she married George Washington Whistler, a close friend of her brother. After growing up in the U.S. and Russia, attending West Point for a brief time and then moving to Paris to study art, the Whistlers’ son James began to split his time between Paris and London. He continued to develop his craft, becoming an important figure in contemporary art circles and generating controversy for his greater focus on color and arrangement than on realism. Anna Whistler moved to London in 1863 to live with her son, and, in 1871, he painted her as the figure in “Whistler’s Mother.” The painting was first shown in 1872, extending Whistler’s reputation, but it has received mixed reviews throughout much of its history. “Whistler’s Mother” now hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and has been rarely exhibited in the United States. This photo is from a cooking school that was part of the Electric Show in 1955 sponsored by Athens electrical dealers and Texas Power & Light Company. The theme of the show was Design For Modern Living. Anyone want to take a guess at how many women attended the three-day cooking school?
