It’s #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) “Second Empire”-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principal’s office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regents’ room, a library, museum, assayer’s office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Today in Black History: Nat Turner led the largest slave rebellion in U.S. history in Virginia in 1831. Turner, and enslaved man and educated minister, planned to capture the county armory with the help of fellow rebels and then march 30 miles to escape their pursuers. He and his followers killed many slave holding whites during the rebellion, which was put down after the state militia was brought in. Many of Nat Turner’s followers were captured and killed immediately, but he escaped and remained at large for weeks. He was ultimately captured on October 30 (pictured above), convicted, and executed. In the wake of the rebellion, angry white mobs tortured and killed hundreds of African Americans, many of whom had no connection to the rebellion. It also led to a new wave of oppressive legislation prohibiting the assembly, movement, and education of enslaved peoples. 📷: Encyclopedia Britannica #todayinblackhistory #natturner #sallieellisdavishouse - @sallieedavis on Instagram

By the late hours of September 2nd, 1885, twenty-eight Chinese American miners lay dead among the smoldering ruins of the Rock Springs, Wyoming Chinatown. Tensions between Chinese and white immigrant miners and the resulting massacre were fueled by local labor groups’ concerted push for a narrative that Chinese miners were taking jobs away from European immigrant laborers. At the time, Union Pacific Coal Mining Company gave the Chinese workers exclusive access to prime mining territories and preference to those that would accept lower wages. For years white miners had been vocal and forceful in their outrage toward the influx of Chinese workers in the United States. Reaching a boiling point, the union miners assaulted the Chinese miner’s settlement, burning seventy-eight houses and shops to the ground, murdering twenty-eight people, and injuring fifteen, throwing some of the wounded into the fires to die. The townsfolk fled for their lives into the hills while all their earthly possessions and businesses burned in the valley below. It was not until a week later that U.S. troops arrived not to condemn those responsible but to safely escort the Chinese miners back to work. President Grover Cleveland asserted that reparations be made to those Chinese whose property was destroyed, and the Union Pacific eventually fired forty-five of the white miners involved in the massacre. However, no legal action was ever taken against the assailants and newspapers showed sympathy toward the white man’s plight of the yellow peril. Every American story needs to be told. Will you help us tell the Chinese American story? Together, we are building a museum not just for Chinese Americans. We’re building a museum for everyone. If you believe that sharing our common history helps to build understanding, acceptance, and unity then consider supporting the new Chinese American Museum in Washington, DC. It’s easy to become part of our family. Contributions at any level help us move our project forward. Support our inaugural build-out and programs while receiving some great benefits too! Did you know that some of the earliest stewards of the nation’s national parks were soldiers from segregated black regiments? The national park system came to be after growing concern to preserve the natural landscape, including protecting timber, lakes, wildlife, and the genocidal displacement of native peoples prevailed. However, securing these new parks and vast terrains became a problem. The solution fell to troops stationed at forts and bases located near the parks. In the 1890s, the Buffalo Soldiers, who had fought in the Indian and Spanish American Wars, added park ranger to their titles. and played a critical role in protecting and building the infrastructure of the country’s vast public lands. To provide the much needed security. Approximately 500 Buffalo Soldiers served as Park Rangers at Yosemite, Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, in 1899, 1903 and 1904. Their duties, which were the same as white regiments, included evicting timber thieves, putting out forest fires and building roads and trails. Today we celebrate #blackinnationalparksweek and we commemorate these and other early Park System stewards. #blackinnationalparks #diversity #equity #inclusion #livetheparkslife #history #blackhistory Pictured Below: Buffalo soldiers of the 25th Infantry, some wearing buffalo robes, Ft.
