This photograph from the @tacomalibrary collection has given me the excuse to reach outside Tacomas borders and share a story from Puyallup. This photograph primarily focuses on the building at the corner of South Meridian and East Pioneer, as it appeared on September 29, 1927. It was home to Hoods Hardware, the Citizens State Bank and the Puyallup City Hall. Directly adjacent to that building, at far right, is the Puyallup Opera House, with its distinctive onion dome. Built in 1890 for $20,000, it was described as “the finest and costliest theatre building in the state outside of Tacoma and Spokane. It was demolished after being damaged by the 1949 earthquake. Dr. Ebenezer Johnson became Buffalo’s first mayor in 1832. He built Johnson’s Cottage on Delaware Avenue in 1834 on 25 acres of land. After his death in 1849, the property was sold to the Buffalo Female Academy around 1851 and served as their first building. The Buffalo Female Academy later changed its name to Buffalo Seminary. #TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua? Old photograph of The College of Engineering Trivandrum, Commonly known as CET, is the first engineering college in Kerala, situated in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. It was founded in 1939 during the reign of the Travancore King, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. History: On 3 July 1939, the college formally came into existence. The institution owes its foundation to the vision of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sree Chitra Tirunal Balarama Varma. It initially started functioning in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (which is now the office of the Postmaster General (PMG)). Maj. T. H. Mathewman was appointed as the first principal of the college with Vastuvidya Kushala Sri, Balakrishna Rao and Prof. D. L. Deshpande on the faculty. The college had an intake of 21 students each for the Degree courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches of Engineering, under the then Travancore University. With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late 1950s, the college administration came under the direct control of the government. In 1960, the college was shifted to its present 50 hectare or 125 acre campus at Kulathoor. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are accredited by AICTE. The college has a library, a central computing facility and a planetarium. He was fined £25 with 15/ costs by Mr. Sabine. P.M. Mr. R. A. Lenthall, who prosecuted, said that betting slips were found by Constables Ryan, Russell, Flint, and Barrington in a bathheater. Mr. Lenthall said that Burrows was convicted in 1930 of having been at the same hotel for the purpose of betting, and was fined £50. Mr. C. J. Philcox, who represented defendant, said that his client was not a bookmaker, but was acting as an agent for one. #200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. THROWBACK THURSDAY Meet Carl Christian Reindorf. He was a Gold coast pastor of the Basel Mission, a historian, teacher, farmer, trader and physician in the Gold Coast ( Now Ghana). Carl Christian Reindorf himself worked as a teacher of history at the catechists and teachers’ seminary at Akropong (Akuapem) from November 1860 to April 1862. In late 1863 Reindorf was appointed teacher at the newly founded middle school at Osu. In 1866 he took part in the local war between the Ada (a Ga-Adangme group) and the Awunas (Ewes from the Volta Region), acting as assistant surgeon. After the war he was appointed head teacher of the Osu Middle School. The course for students from the ages of fourteen to eighteen included subjects such as biblical exegesis, theology, history and geography, English, and, for the senior classes, Greek. Carl Christian Reindorf worked as a teacher at Osu until 1872. He established a boarding school at Mayera with a dozen Ga boys from Accra. He lived and worked in Mayera for a decade before returning to Christiansborg, Osu. Carl finished work on his notable book, A History of the Gold Coast and Asante in 1889. This literary piece was originally written in the Ga language. The English translation of the book was published in Basel in 1895. Carl Christian Reindorf ’s History of the Gold Coast and Asante has a special place in West African historiography. Drawing a colorful and lively picture of historical events, it was written from an African point of view; in it Reindorf gave Africans a voice and the ability to actively shape history, in marked contrast to the views of his European predecessors and contemporaries. Have you been down to Bathurst & Lakeshore lately? Big things are afoot. Loblaws’ historic façade has been rebuilt and the long-awaited 21st century grocery store has finally opened its doors. In late 2015, the careful dismantling of the iconic art deco warehouse structure began. Brick by brick. Stone by stone. The original materials were catalogued and stored offsite while the new substructure was erected. Reconstruction of the facades began in the mid-2018 and is now complete. - @eraarch on Instagram

To start our Downtown Regina Cultural Trailway series, we have St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral. St Paul’s Cathedral was founded in 1882 in one of the tents that made up the early Regina settlement. The parish built a church in 1883 on the Cathedral’s current site, but in 1895 after four years of planning and six months of construction, the Cathedral you see today was built. During the tornado of 1912, the First Baptist Church’s dome was thrown onto the Cathedral. Although the Cathedral had been damaged, the bishop decided it was intact enough, and opened his doors to all congregations whose churches had more severe damages. The church continued development in 1949 with a memorial chapel, a new parish hall in 1958, and in 2012 improvements for accessibility were made. Some fun facts! -St Paul’s became a Cathedral in 1973. -St Paul’s is built mainly in the Gothic Revival style, although the corner bell-tower is built in the Norman style. On Sunday, September 23rd, police marched in and arrested 250 Black men in South Atlanta. These men had gathered to discuss how to protect their community. Miles away, police had caught wind of the gathering and panicked at the thought of an impending retaliatory attack. They stormed the neighborhood to disarm and disable the group. A shoot-out ensued when they arrived. In the midst of the gunfire, a white police officer was killed. And just like that, the #southatlanta men were quickly rounded up and carted off for booking. It was one of many scenes of chaos and injustice unfurling across Atlanta during the race riots in 1906. This story, and the larger narrative about the Atlanta Race Riots, wasn’t included in the history curriculum of Atlanta Public Schools until 2006, one hundred years after its occurrence. And South Atlanta was #Brownsville back then. Just over 100 years later, we wanted to be sure to share it with our friends and neighbors across the city. At FCS, we’re fixated on neighboring, dignity, and development. The politician Robert Fern Lyons and his family were first to occupy the home. Corktown Detroit 1912, the corner of Church Street & Michigan Avenue with Trumbull Avenue behind the former Detroit Police Second Precinct. This image shows three children playing and the @tigers historic Navin Field on the right of the image. Also notice the hitching posts along the sidewalk for tying up your horse. The Detroit Police Second Precinct building was demolished in 1938 when Michigan Avenue was widened. It was built in 1856 and was located at Mulberry and Park Streets near St. Marys Church. This brick building was replaced in 1890 by this building at 82 Mulberry Street which was known as St. Marys Boys School. The Alhambra Apartments are located at 4902 Capitol in the Dundee neighborhood. Completed in 1922, the Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival structure was built by the Drake Realty Construction Company amid a multi-family housing boom in the neighborhood. The building still stands today and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a member of the Dundee-Happy Hollow Historic District. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. Cotton was an integral part of the Waco economy for many years. The climate and soil was ideal for cotton production, making McLennan County the leading cotton-producing county in Texas. In the years following the Civil War, construction of the Suspension Bridge and the Waco Tap Railroad increased the capacity of the Waco cotton market. By the late 1800’s life in Waco began to revolve around the cotton crop. This photo by famed Waco photographer Fred Gildersleeve shows a common occurrence at the town square, farmers from surrounding counties would travel to show and sell cotton. There was even an annual festival and crop palace built in Waco to celebrate this popular crop. The Cotton Palace opened in 1894 and featured pageants, exhibits, and thousands in attendance. Luck eventually ran out for Waco and the cotton boom slowed down. Bad weather, decreased demand for cotton, and rapidly advancing technology changed the landscape of Waco’s cotton economy forever. - @historicwacofoundation on Instagram

Located at 2007 Franklin Street in San Francisco is the Haas-Lilienthal House, a beautiful Queen Anne designed by Peter R.
