JAMES IVESON PAINTING September 1 through October 15, 2020 Questions from Daisy Sheff August 2020 In our Graphite Journal chat, you said you were interested in “families.” Does having a daughter change your practice/subject matter? Is that sweet Norma in Drink? Yes, thats Norma in Drink. She was holding a cup whilst watching a tv show and she let it balance on her nose. This gave me enough time to draw her. I never set out to make a drawing. I draw when there’s time to draw, when everyone is preoccupied, when I’m not needed for anything. The drawings I get most attached to and take to the studio seem to happen when I feel fortunate and quite literally happy. Although the faces aren’t defined, I have the feeling that these are of specific individuals/actual events--- is this true? The paintings are very accurate to me in their description. I think the definition of a person comes from their whole body, not their face. I think likeness begins with posture, which is formed out of personal gestures––how a person sits on a chair, the shape of their elbow or shoulder in repose. They have such specificity while relying on color blocks- could be called “abstraction.” Yes, the paintings have ended up here. I am sensitive to what can’t happen in terms of illusion and these color blocks are what get left. There are a lot of changes that take place in these paintings. A sort of timeline is evident in their textures, edges, and underpainting. The process is technically illogical in terms of the craft of painting. They are quite clumsy. 🇮🇹 Qualche test per il NIMBLE CARNUFEX😁🤟🏻 Con questa lama ho risolto dei problemi che aveva il Carnufex 1 dovuti allo spessore eccessivo (8,6mm). Potete vedere nelle foto le differenti geometrie a confronto. Il NIMBLE CARNUFEX ha una molatura full flat di più di 7cm con uno spessore di 5,7mm. Ho voluto provare una geometria piuttosto esile improntando la lama sui lavori di taglio, piuttosto che sui lavori di spacco. Pur essendo realizzato in S7, temevo per l’integrità della lama per cui ho ovviato il problema di cippature o pieghe indesiderate facendo un angolo di affilatura di 25º su 0,9mm di spessore. Si sta dimostrando un bel giocattolino, che ve ne pare?😇 🇬🇧 Some tests for NIMBLE CARNUFEX😁🤟🏻 With this blade I solved some problems of 1st CARNUFEX due to the huge thickness (8,6mm). In the photos you can see the different blade geometries. The NIMBLE CARNUFEX has higher than 7cm full flat grind with 5,7mm blade thickness. I wanted to try a rather slander geometry to make it work better in to cutting work than splitting work. The blade is made in S7 steel but I was afraid about its integrity so I decided to prevent unwanted chipping or creasing with a 25º cutting edge on a thickness of 0,9mm. This painting out of my bomb series 2018 is one of my favorites, i know youre not suppose to have favorites like kids but I couldnt help myself. These paintings where made by blowing up hole paint tubes (old holland paint only @oldhollandcolours )with F4 explosives that I bought on the dark web you can still see pieces of metal from the paint tubes. I wouldnt consider these paintings abstract on the contrary they are a realistic representation of the fleeting moment that an explosief left behind manipulating the oil paint. Certa vez, eu estava no meu quarto tentando ler um livro mas um ruído de pessoas falando me tirava a concentração. Olhei pela janela e vi um aglomero de gente observando alguma coisa. Carros parados no meio da estrada e uma multidão fofocando. “Tem um monstro peludo atacando um homem”, alguém gritou apontando para o suposto local do crime. “Parece um lobisomem”, alguém incentivou. “Quem morreu?”, perguntou uma velhinha. Curioso, me aproximei daquela confusão. Na verdade, aquelas histórias eram apenas o que tinham “ouvido falar”. Ninguém realmente sabia o que estava acontecendo. Tudo havia começado com um homem que viu uma capivara no mato e resolveu observá-la, já que não era comum ver capivaras por ali. O segundo homem que parou, não parou pela capivara, mas pelo primeiro homem que a observava. Afinal, por que alguém pararia para observar uma capivara naquele sol escaldante do meio dia? E assim foi. O terceiro homem veio pelo segundo, o quarto pelo terceiro. Todos tomados pela curiosidade. Todos parados pela multidão. Meu lado sarcástico ria por dentro em agonia. A vontade de sair contando aquela cena para todo mundo era quase que incontrolável. Imagina que piada boa para contar na ceia de Natal? Eu queria zombar dos que haviam parado. Mas infelizmente, pensando melhor, eu TAMBÉM estava lá na multidão dando volume. Pronto, eu pensei. Perdi a piada. Sem risadinhas. Eu precisava guardar aquelas coceguinhas mentais para mim. Caso contrário, faria papel de tolo. Voltei pra casa calado. Pensativo. Tentando me conter. No final do dia, achei que teria um ataque de risos, mas não cheguei nem a abrir a boca. UPCOMING AT BERRY CAMPBELL| ANN PURCELL: KALI POEM SERIES 10/15/20 Berry Campbell Gallery is pleased to announce an important exhibition curated from Ann Purcell’s “Kali Poem” series. For Purcell, the desire to achieve more spontaneity led to this series, created from the mid-1980s into the early 2000s. However, such inevitability was not intentional. Instead, it was the result of a compulsion she felt. She notes: “For the first time in my work, it was not out of joy, but from some other place, some other sphere. They just seemed to appear.” However, she knew they had a meaning, and the answer came to her from a favorite poem: May Sarton’s “The Invocation to Kali,” published in Poetry (1971). In fact, such a hindsight recognition is perfectly in keeping with Sarton’s poem, as the poem is one of process and reckoning. In four sections, the poet and reader examine the human need to destroy. The poem’s fifth section, the “Invocation,” is an entreaty to the Hindu goddess Kali to “be with us,” in order to “bring darkness into light.” For Sarton, it is the power represented by Kali—a goddess with a seemingly terrible form who is a destroyer of evil forces and also a kind protector of the universe—that gives recognition to how we must strive to bring creation out of destruction.[i] One section of the “Invocation” had long lodged in Purcell’s mind. Poco se conoce sobre la relación de las sociedad antiguas con los animales. Actualmente vivimos en un contexto ecológico mermado por la depredación de los ecosistemas por extractivismos imperante relacionado a la minería, pesca industrial e industria forestal, lo que ha alterado enormemente los balances ecológicos y la biodiversidad. En el pasado la relación con los animales, y de la naturaleza en su conjunto, era muy distinta a la actual. Muchos animales son entidades cargadas de un profundo simbolismo relacionado a sus atributos, ambiente y etología. Las llamas fueron usadas como animales de carga, siendo a la vez compañeros en la ruta, donde los punteros o líderes de la recua eran muy valorados por sus conocimiento sobre el territorio y liderazgo entre sus pares. Los perros son el animal doméstico más antiguo, siendo además de amigos y compañeros, una ayuda para actividades como el pastoreo y la caza. Mientras que las tortugas y los pelícanos eran altamente valorados por motivos que hoy desconocemos, siendo enterrados como ofrenda en algunas tumbas. La Unidad de Patrimonio Comunal de la I. Municipalidad de Quintero, parte de la Red de Museos Región de Valparaíso, nos comparte información sobre el hallazgo de restos de palecamélidos en la Bahía de Quintero, los cuales fueron recuperados del fondo marino el 2012. Éstos corresponden principalmente a la extremidad anterior superior (húmero distal y radioulna), un cuarto carpiano y fragmentos de tibia, los cuales son comparables con los géneros Palaeolama y Hemiauchenia. Siendo estos camélidos extintos, posiblemente, los que precedieron a los actuales, donde se incluyen los guanacos. La prueba de carbono 14 a sedimentos orgánicos de la capa de arcilla y grava en la que estaban encapsulados, arrojó 13.600 años de antigüedad. Periodo que corresponde al fin de la úlltima era glacial. en la que grupos de humanos cazadores recolectores se dispersaban por América. Y aunque estos restos no presentan evidencia de intervención humana, si permiten conocer la ecología de los pastizales costeros donde habitaron los paleoindios, y donde probablemente cazaron paleocamélidos. these two have been dusted off and are on their way to a dear friend in colombia - i can’t imagine them in a better home!! @nicolasuribeb asked if i had anything forgotten, sitting behind a wood stove - little did he know how astute his selection was! i made these last winter, after months of misery being curled up in a ball on the ground in front of a wood stove, alone in a rural rental that i had moved to in order to work. ironically, a few months into it i ended up completely incapacitated with a now chronic stomach disability. i’ve always been thin - but i got pretty darn sallow looking. so obviously i made a few sketches to document! i kept imagining back home, and the view of a nearby steeple from my old studio. a few days later Notre Dame burnt down, so in a way this was my preemptive memorial. happy to be part of your collection, @nicolasuribeb :) - @timothypwilson on Instagram
