USMC accident: F-35B crash, KC-130J emergency landing The pilot of an F-35B has ejected and parachuted himself to safety after colliding with a KC-130J during a mid-air refuelling operation over southern California, around 16:00 hrs (local time) on 29 September 2020. The KC-130J was able to make an emergency landing, all eight crew members survived. The F-35B pilot is reported to have slight injuries and is being treated. The Lightning II crashed just north of the Salton Sea, Imperial County, after hitting a KC-130J tanker, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing. The KC-130J, BuNo 166765/QB of VMGR-352, based at MCAS Miramar (CA), landed in a field in the vicinity of Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport. The F-35B (BuNo unknown) disintegrated and is completely destroyed. It was operating out of Miramar too, but was based at Yuma AFB (AZ). The cause of the collision is unknown. This week’s fourth Battle of Britain aircraft is the Boulton Paul Defiant, also known as the ‘turret fighter’. It is often described as the worst RAF fighter aircraft. But was it really? Let’s find out… While the Hurricane and especially the Spitfire are famous for fighting in the Battle of Britain, the Defiant is somewhat forgotten. Yet, it is one of the most interesting aircraft ever to serve with the RAF. What made the Defiant so special, was the concept of a turret-armed interceptor fighter. By the mid-1930s bomber aircraft had developed into fast aircraft, which were difficult to intercept by existing fighter aircraft. It was believed that air combat would happen at such great speed that a fighter with the guns firing straight ahead would have insufficient time to shoot down a bomber. The solution was to use a fully rotating gun turret which could fire at the bomber. The idea was that the turret fighter would fly next to the enemy bomber and riddle it with gun fire, much like a naval engagement during the Battle of Trafalgar. Unlike Nelson’s ships, the four-gun electro-hydraulic turret could fire 2,400 rounds per minute. It seemed like a valid concept and Boulton-Paul replied to the Air Ministry’s Specification F.9/35 of a two-seater day-and-night ‘turret fighter’ by offering the Defiant design. A prototype first flew on 11 August 1937. Flight trials revealed the aircraft possessed positive flight characteristics and was a stable gun platform. Its Rolls Royce Merlin engine gave it a top speed of 302 mph (486 km/h), around 20 mph (32 km/h) slower than the Hurricane. When Hitler invaded France, only two fighter squadrons were fully equipped with the Defiant. On 13 May, Defiants of No. 264 Squadron engaged a formation of German Stuka bombers and claimed four of them. In turn, they were attacked by the escorting German Messerschmitt fighters which shot down five out of six Defiants. In the next sorties, the scenario repeated itself: the Defiant was more than capable of bringing down a German bomber, but was vulnerable against agile fighter aircraft. KIMPO AIRFIELD - KOREAN WAR, SEPTEMBER 1950 In this great photo from September 1950, the US Marines on the ground are greeting 2 pilots of a Mustang fighter plane at Kimpo airfield in South Korea. A major objective after the famous Inchon Landing was to recapture and secure the Kimpo Airfield, which was located closest to Seoul. Recapturing this airfield from the North Korea communists was critical in allowing US Air Force fighter planes to provide close air support to the US ground troops as they were fighting and advancing towards Seoul. This airfield was also critical for cargo planes to use for supplying the troops as they made their advance on the ground. As the Korean War progressed, various airbases were established closest to the front lines to allow fighter planes cargo planes, and helicopters to fly and provide support to the fighting forces on the ground. This photo shows the very first Mustang P51 fighter plane to land right after the US Marines had recaptured and secure the Kimpo airfield in September 1950, just a few days after the Inchon Landing. From many interviews I conducted with Korean War veterans, I learned they have a great admiration and respect for each other. For the troops on the ground, the fighter pilots were their saviors and for the pilots flying in the sky, they regarded the infantry soldiers as the real heroes. This post is dedicated in honor of these brothers in arms, who fought with great courage to save the people of South Korea from communist tyranny. Boeing Co. will set plans this week to consolidate 787 Dreamliner assembly in South Carolina, people familiar with the matter said, ending production of that jetliner in Washington state as the coronavirus pandemic saps demand for aircraft. The decision carries significant implications for the Seattle-area economy and Boeing’s unionized workforce around Puget Sound. It wasn’t clear over what period of time the consolidation would play out, or how many employees might be affected by the move. Boeing could announce the plans as soon as this week, some of the people familiar with the matter said. Boeing said in July that it was studying options to handle a slowdown in demand for the 787 that has led it to reduce production. WH003 taxiing to RWY32L last week, wonderful captured by ©Chip Fricke! After discussing the 777X wingtip malfunction procedure at airports, lets take a look at the T/O procedure for the FWT today! While the crew is taxiing the aircraft to the RWY, the pilot/copilot gives the input command with a switch on the overhead panel, the wingtip extension, before reaching the hold short zone. This is a certain point: the extension point - it is determined based on the unique physical properties of each airport and geometric datas. The switch is on FOLDED, the EICAS shows the wingtips in FOLDED position + the word sign on the display, the electronic checklist shows the Extended sign white - this point is not filled. As soon as the pilot gives the extension input with the switch, the word sign FOLDED disappears on the EICAS, the area of the wing tip movement is displayed with stripes. The procedure takes 20s (folding + lock mechanism). As soon as the sensors in the mechanism report: retracted, the wings are marked green on the EICAS and green sign EXTENDED is displayed, the electronic checklist switch the row into green and a checkmark is set - the wingtip configuration is done. The procedure is included in the take off checklist in order to set the aircraft to the T/O configuration. It is also recommended to unfold the wingtips before reaching the RWY/hold short point - departure times can thus be reduced. The B-66 was developed from the U.S. Navy A3D Skywarrior as a tactical light bomber and photo reconnaissance aircraft. The RB-66B photo reconnaissance version became the first production series and totaled 145 of the 294 B-66s built. The USAF also developed a weather reconnaissance version, and various electronic countermeasures (ECM) versions. ECM B-66s became very important elements in strikes against North Vietnam. They could detect enemy radar emissions and jam their signals, thereby confusing enemy defenses. In addition, some B-66s flew pathfinder missions, guiding F-105 and F-4 bombing strikes through bad weather. The whole lunchbox is 371 calories ✔️ . This is my usual meal I have 3 times at work (I eat 3 lunches, one every 3 hours). Heute vor 51 Jahren erreicht die Concorde erstmals die Überschallgeschwindigkeit. Es ist der zweite Flugzeugtyp, dem das gelingt. Bereits zuvor hatte die sowjetische Tupolew Tu-144 einen Überschallflug erfolgreich beendet. Die hohen Entwicklungskosten der Concorde konnten nur durch eine staatliche Unterstützung getragen werden. Der enorme Treibstoffverbrauch sorgte zusätzlich dafür, dass viele Fluggesellschaften ihre Bestellungen im Zuge der Ölkrise von 1973 zurückzogen. Nur die Fluggesellschaften Air France und British Airways wurden am Ende mit dem Überschallflugzeug beliefert. Außerdem erteilte die USA lange Zeit ein Lande- und Überflugverbot in den Vereinigten Staaten, da die Flüge überdurchschnittlich laut waren. Jahre später war die Strecke von Europa nach New York die beliebteste Strecke für Passagier-Überschallflüge. Am 25. Juli 2000 stürzte eine Concorde nur eine Minute nach dem Start am Flughafen Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle ab und läutete das langsame Ende von Überschallflügen ein. Die britische Luftfahrtbehörde entzog der Concorde die Flugtauglichkeitsbescheinigung, Air France stellte den Flugbetrieb ein. Verbesserungen des Flugzeugtyps machten einen erneuten Start der Concorde möglich, jedoch blieben die Passagiere aus. Mitte 2003 fand der letzte kommerzielle Flug einer Concorde statt. Hier einige Fakten zu der Concorde: 👉 Der Rekord für die Strecke von Paris nach New York wurde 1981 mit einer Concorde aufgestellt. Flugzeit: 3 Stunden, 30 Minuten und 11 Sekunden. 👉 Vom 15. bis 17. August 1995 fand die bisher schnellste Weltumrundung mit einem Passagierfugzeug statt. Der Concorde-Flug inklusive aller Zwischenlandungen dauerte 31 Stunden, 27 Minuten und 49 Sekunden. 👉 Die Concorde ermöglichte, dass Phil Collins beim Live-Aid-Konzert am 13. Juli 1985 sowohl in Philadelphia als auch in London live auftreten konnte. 👉 Dank doppelter Überschallgeschwindigkeit konnten Passagiere zweier Conconrde-Flüge am 11.
